Tomorrow, Friday, August 29th is a staff-only professional development day for the Olmsted Falls School District. There will be no school for students tomorrow – EXCEPT FOR OFHS STUDENTS ATTENDING POLARIS CAREER CENTER OR OMDUSMAN, WHICH WILL BE IN SESSION.
Buses this Friday will run ONLY to and from OFHS for Polaris and Ombudsman students in the morning, midday and afternoon. Students should be at the high school 5 minutes prior to the designated departure time.

VOLUNTEERS HELP PROVIDE EXTRA WARM WELCOME BACK FOR STUDENTS!

Kindergarten students arrived for their first official day of school at the Olmsted Falls Early Childhood Center this past Monday, August 25th. Our littlest Bulldogs were greeted at the door by plenty of volunteers with friendly faces – many thanks to PTA and Central Office staff who were on-site to help guide arrivals!

ALERT RE: SCHOOL FEES / EZPAY
Please note that school fees for all students (grades K-12) for the 2014-2015 school year have been uploaded and are now available for payment using the EZPay system. This includes any applicable fees for individual courses at Olmsted Falls High School.
New this year for OFHS parents is an integration between EZPay and PowerSchool, which will automatically show individual course fees connected to your student’s schedule. We hope our high school parents will find this to be a significant improvement over past years when parents had to search and select individual course fees manually.
As always, funds can also be added to student lunch accounts using the EZPay system at anytime.

Reminder: Olmsted Falls School District no longer has the capacity to process credit card payments in school offices or over the phone. REQUIRED BACK-TO-SCHOOL FORMS FOR RETURNING STUDENTS PAST DUE
Parents of returning students who have not yet accessed the InfoSnap portal through their PowerSchool parent accounts to verify student information, make changes (if needed), and submit all required start-of-the-year forms (Emergency Medical Authorization, Acceptable Technology Use Policy, Permission to Photograph, etc.) electronically for the 2014-2015 school year are urged to contact your child’s school building today for assistance. It is important that we have the most current information on file for all students.

NEW SCHOOL MEAL REQUIREMENTS NOW OPERATING IN O.F. SCHOOLS
There are additional new requirements for school news this school year due to the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
The Olmsted Falls Food Service Department has already been gradually making some of these changes so it wouldn’t be such a shock to the students when they were finally required.
The Bigger Changes:
- Students now will be required to have l/2 cup of fruit or vegetables on their breakfast tray for it to count as a full meal. Anything less than a full mean is charged at a la carte prices. Purchasing items a la carte will be expensive, so we encourage students to buy the full meal as that is the best deal. We plan to offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily to give students more from which to select.
- 100% of all grains offered must be whole grain rich. This means all bread, pasta, and cereal products must be whole grain rich. Due to this, you will see some changes in the menu offerings.
- The first sodium targets for both breakfast and lunch must be implemented this year.
Breakfast < 540mg
- Lunch K- grade 5 < 1230 mg. sodium
- Lunch grades 6-8 < 1360 mg. sodium
- Lunch grades 9-12 <1420 mg. sodium
Most entrees are anywhere from 400-1000 mg of sodium. White milk is 120 mg of sodium and chocolate milk, 240 mg of sodium. One slice of bread contains about 120 mg of sodium. Regular condiments contain anywhere from 100-400 mg or more of sodium
Keeping all this in mind, it was a juggling act to meet this requirement. Because of this new 2014-15 school year mandate on sodium, all condiments will be pre-portioned and the amount a student can take will be limited to keep within the new requirement. This applies to all salad dressings, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, hot sauce etc.
To help meet this requirement we are also purchasing some low sodium products.

An informational parent meeting for the Bulldog Theatre Company, OFMS’s drama club, is Thursday, August 28th from 7-7:30 p.m. in the OFMS cafeteria. The meeting will include information about the company’s two shows for this school year, as well as free after-school workshops for students in grades 6-8.

OF kindergarten through grade 5 students are invited to attend a mini cheer clinic, then cheer the varsity Bulldogs to victory at the team’s September 5th game against Canton South High School.
The clinic for grades 3-5 is from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 2nd and for K-2, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 4th. The OFHS cheerleaders are sponsoring this event with the clinics at OFIS. To view a flyer with more details, CLICK HERE.
OFHS PTA IS LOOKING FOR SUPER HEROES!
To download an OFHS PTA membership form, CLICK HERE. The letter has great reasons why you should join PTA. Senior parents especially are encouraged to do so. For your child to be eligible for college scholarship money from the OFHS PTA, parents need to be members. If you join by Thursday, August 28th, you will be entered into a gift card raffle.

OFAB THANKS ALL FOR PAST HELP AND ENCOURAGE CONTINUED AID
Over the last five years, the Olmsted Falls Athletic Boosters, through the community’s help, has contributed $408,569 in various projects and items. This funding helps the OF school district continue to be the only conference school without pay-to-play fees or support transportation costs. For a list of projects, CLICK HERE.
Volunteers are still needed to work concessions. You also may become a patron. The group’s meetings are the first Monday of the month starting at 7 in the OFHS media center. For more details about OFAB, CLICK HERE.

Tickets are available for $10 each from various athletic teams and organizations including: baseball, football, tennis, boys/girls basketball, bowling, fast pitch, golf, boys/girls soccer, track, volleyball, wrestling, Athletic Boosters, Hockey Association, Masquers, Swim Association, Volleyball Association and Music Association.
In addition tickets will be available in the board office, at all home football games, or by contacting OFAB President Jim Polcar at (440) 724-3454.
Tickets are $10. There will be a drawing of 10 people at the October 10th football game. October 31st football game will bring those winners to see who the ultimate winner is. Winner will select from a 2014 Chevy Cruze or $10,000. Winner must be 18 years or older to win. More rules on the OFAB website.

Help cheer the Bulldogs varsity football team to victory at the 2014 Helping Hands Tailgate for the September 5 game at our Charles A. Harding Memorial Stadium. The group will gather from 6-7 p.m. for food and fun, then sit in a designated set of bleachers at the south end of the stadium for the 7 p.m. game.
Do your dressers, attic and garage need cleaning of children’s and maternity items? Let Olmsted Early Childhood PTA help you. Its annual Autumn Attic Resale is September 27 at the OFMS. This resale event is for gently-used infant, children, teen and maternity clothing, furniture, décor, bedding, strollers, activity baby gear, safety, toys, games and other miscellaneous for all ages of children. Please do not sell car seats or cribs or any recalled items. Vendors also are invited to sell their products.
Sellers manage their own tables and keep ALL their profits. The cost per space is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Set up is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 26. The registration deadline is September 17.
All are invited to attend the OECPTA’s first meeting of the new school year at 7 p.m. in the OFMS media center. The group is for families with children ages 6 and under. Membership is open to anyone in the Olmsted communities interested in enriching the lives of our preschoolers, toddlers and infants. For more details, go to oecpta.org.

The 22nd annual OF Hockey Golf Outing is September 20 at Emerald Woods Golf Course, 12501 S. Boone Road, Columbia Township. The four person scramble shotgun event includes continental breakfast, lunch at the turn, steak and potato dinner and refreshments for $75. The games pay out all funds paid in – $20/team skins, $1/closest to pin, $1 longest drive.
SIX TO BE INDUCTED INTO ALUMNI HALL OF FAME
This year’s inductees into the Olmsted Falls Schools Endowment and Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame are Art Gibel, class of 1968, business; Dave Schuster, ’70, business/science; Lora Hirschberg, ’81, entertainment; Scott Highhouse, ’82, health/education; Debbie Koeppen Berry, ’87, science/math and Craig Barbee, educator.
The induction ceremony is Thursday, September 18th at the German American Club. The community is invited to attend the ceremony and its dinner. Tickets are $25.

An Olmsted Falls Athletic Boosters golf outing that United Parcel Service will sponsor is set for Sept. 20 at the Springvale Golf Club, 5871 Canterbury Road, North Olmsted.
The cost is $80 a person or $25 for dinner only. It includes a four person scramble 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, dinner, contests for the best score by a foursome, longest drive (women and men) closest to the pin and basket raffles. All money is due Friday, September 12.

OF MUSIC ASSOCIATION STRIKES UP ITS 2014-15 ACTIVITIES
The OFMA is ready for this year’s activities. Its first meeting is September 3rd at 7 p.m. in the OFHS choir room. It invites parents and community members to become members and volunteer at various music activities. The band will travel and play at DisneyWorld from Feb. 12-17, 2015.

Youth, teens and adults will find various programs at the Olmsted Falls Library. This fall they range from Coffee 101, Welcome to Medicare to teens learning how to make interactive video game or sharing their writing and children enjoying finger play and rhymes with their families.

The Olmsted Community Center is accepting applications for its Holiday Home & Craft Shoppe on November 15th. The price for an 8-foot space is $35. Last year the show saw more than 500 attendees.
The community is invited to a special Safety Forces Tribute Concert Sept. 1 at East River Park.
The event begins at noon with a safety vehicle display. Victory Highway will play from 2-4 p.m. There also will be a moment of silence to those police and fire officers who died in the line of duty.
Celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Becker’s Donuts of Columbia Station and help raise funds for local area food pantries.
