Mrs. Kemper’s 2nd grade class had a SkypeTM discussion with Debbie Dadey, co-author of the popular Bailey School Kids book series on Friday, January 20th.  SkypeTM is a free internet video conferencing service that allows subscribers to chat together via the internet. 

In preparation for the discussion, the children each received a book signed by Debbie Dadey to read over the winter break.  They also read two of her books in class this month.

Each student prepared a question to ask during the interview, and the discussion was a huge success.  Ms. Dadey explained her writing process, showed the students a draft of one her books, and a never before seen copy of a soon-to-be-released book.  The students really seemed to enjoy using this technology to meet a favorite author.

Mrs. Kemper organized the call with the help of Ms. Pinizzotto (educational aide), Nicole Joseph (a parent volunteer), and Ms. Tindera (technology asst.).  They hope to organize more SkypeTM calls this year to supplement the class instruction.

SOS: SIGNS OF SUICIDE PROGRAM GETS UNDERWAY AT OFMS NEXT WEEK

As a proactive way to address the important topic of teen depression and related issues, Olmsted Falls Middle School is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training through the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Middle School Program.  The SOS Program at OFMS will include a classroom presentation which will be conducted by our own school counselors and school psychologists.  All seventh graders will participate in this program on the following days:  Phoenix Team on Monday, January 30^th; Griffin Team on Monday, February 13^th.

OFHS VARSITY SWIMMING & DIVING UPDATE

The Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving Team has improved their record to 6-2 (4-2 SWC), with recent victories over Amherst, Avon Lake, and Fairview.  Senior Bridget Liddy and Junior Joan Dregalla lead the team with 13 Individual 1st place finishes on the season.  Senior Kate Kerney leads the Diving Team with three 1st place finishes.  The girls travel to Westlake this Friday, January 27^th.

Congratulations to the OFHS 400 Freestyle Relay Team of Senior Greg Porch, Senior Kevin Bohland, Sophmore Tommy Petro, and Junior Aidan Burton set new school record of 3:32.56 vs. Berea HS on Jan. 20th.

The Boys Swimming and Diving Team has also improved to 6-2 (4-2 SWC), with January victories over Berea and Fairview.  Against Berea last Friday, January 20^th, the boys set four school records!  Senior Kevin Bohland set a new record in the 50 Free with a time of 23.66.  Junior Aidan Burton set two records – in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 58.59, and in the 100 Backstroke with a time 56.43.  The boys 400 Freestyle Relay of Senior Greg Porch, Senior Kevin Bohland, Sophomore Tommy Petro, and Junior Aidan Burton set a new school record of 3:32.56, breaking the previous record from 2002 by more than 3 seconds.  On Tuesday, January 24^th, against Fairview, the Boys 200 Medley Relay of Junior Aidan Burton, Sophomore Jake Bolton, Sophomore Tommy Petro, and Senior Kevin Bohland set a new school record of 1:49.60, breaking the old record, set in 2005 by 0.21.  The Boys also travel to Westlake this Friday, January 27th.  Senior Greg Porch and Junior Aidan Burton lead the team with 14 Individual 1st place finishes on the season.  Junior Jon Levin leads the diving team with three 1st place finishes.

On Saturday, January 14th, the OFHS Academic Team competed in an OAC Tournament at Warren G. Harding High School.  The day was marked by outstanding team performances at all levels!  The A Team (Sohan Vartak, Marty Mendenhall, Brad Sevcik, and Nathan Seese) went 10-0 on the day, winning the Varsity Division.  The B Team (Tom Hoy, Richie Mendehall, Nick Wickham, Andy Nageotte, and Justin McIsaac) went 6-2 on the day, making the top division for playoffs before being eliminated by South Range. They finished in a tie for 4th.  The C Team (Julie Wu, Emily Burland., Samantha Kuehn, Xavier Riviera, and Conner Arendec) went 5-3 on the day, making the top division for the playoffs before being eliminated by our A Team. They finished in a tie for 4th.  The JV A Team (David Graham, Cecelia Dahlinger, Zach Buchta, Emily Raffay.) went 5-2 on the day and won the JV Division for the tournament. (Zach Buchta is an 8th grader!!)  The JV B Team (Jorden Rieke, Mike Zeber, Daniel Gluvna, Eric Pfisterer) went 4-3 on the day and placed 4th in the JV Division for the tournament.

This is the first time the OFHS Academic Team has had not one, not two, but three varsity teams make the top playoff division of a tournament!

On Saturday, January 21st, the Academic Team competed in the SWC Tournament at Avon Lake High School.  For the fourth year in a row, our Academic Team won the SWC Tournament and brought home the “traveling” trophy!  Congratulations to Sohan Vartak (captain), Marty Mendenhall, Brad Sevcik, Tom Hoy, and Emily Burland (pictured above) who represented Olmsted Falls on Saturday. 

ANNUAL GEOGRAPHY BEES HELD AT INTERMEDIATE / MIDDLE SCHOOLS

OFIS and OFMS students got right back to business following the winter break as each building hosted their Annual Geography Bee events.  Each year, students in each building qualify to participate in the respective Geography Bees by taking a qualifying exam in advance of the events.

OFIS held its Annual Geography Bee on Thursday, January 5^th in the gymnasium.  A total of 62 students qualified to participate in this year’s event.  Congratulations to OFIS 5^th grader Matthew Theilman for emerging as the winner of the 2012 OFIS Geography Bee.  Following the school-level competition, Matthew, who is a student in Mrs. Pojman’s class, completed a written test to see if he qualifies for the state competition in April. Congratulations again and good luck to Matthew!

OFMS hosted its 21^st Annual Geography Bee on Tuesday, January 10^th.  Following two rounds of written qualifying exams, a total of 20 students qualified to participate in this year’s OFMS Geography Bee event.  Congratulations to 8^th graders Matt Harris for emerging as the winner of the 2012 OFMS Geography Bee.  Matt will now take a written qualifying exam which could allow him to compete in the State Geography Bee held in March 2012. Congratulations again and good luck to Matt!

READING BUDDIES LEARN AND HAVE FUN AT FALLS-LENOX

OLMSTED FALLS MUSIC ASSOCIATION UPDATE

All music students in grades 8 through 12 will be given an opportunity to earn travel credits towards future high school music trips such as last year’s trip to New York City.  This is the second year that students will be selling Hoagies to be delivered on Super Bowl Saturday, February 4, 2012.  Students will have order forms the week of January 9th.  Hoagies will cost $5 each with $3 going directly to the students travel accounts.  This event is sponsored by our friends at Shakers IGA, so be sure to see your favorite musician in grades 8 through 12 to order your hoagies!

Please join OFMA the first Wednesday of every month in the high school choir room at 7pm to discuss upcoming events and fund raising opportunities for our outstanding music program!

OFHS KEY CLUB “JEANS FOR TEENS” COLLECTION

The Olmsted Falls High School Key Club is collecting gently used jeans of all sizes, colors and brands for the “Jeans for Teens” drive sponsored by Aéropostale.  The school that collects the most jeans to be donated to homeless shelters will win scholarship money, a celebrity attended party and a pair of designer jeans for every student.  Please consider going through your closets and donating your old jeans.  Collection boxes have been set up in the high school library to collect your donations now through February 12th.  If you have any questions, please contact Jenelle Hughes at the High School.

OFIS PTA PARTNERS WITH OLMSTED COMMUNITY CENTER FOR SATURDAY ACTIVITY NIGHT DONATION PROGRAM IN FEBRUARY

Saturday Activity Nights, a youth program that hosts gym activities, DJ/dance party, craft, games and fun for ages 8-14, from 7-10 p.m. on Saturdays at the Olmsted Community Center (8170 Mapleway Dr., Olmsted Falls) will partner in February with OFIS PTA. All 4th and 5th grade students at OFIS will receive coupons that they can use at each of the Saturday Activity Nights in the month of February. Each coupon allows OFIS Students to receive a free drink. For each coupon used by OFIS students, the Saturday Activity Night program will give $1.00 back to OFIS PTA!  Parents please encourage the use of these coupons and help our PTA earn money for OFIS.

FALLS-LENOX CELEBRATES DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK

Students at Falls-Lenox celebrated Disability Awareness Week with a variety of special activities and events.   A grade level Poster Contest was held and winners were featured on this week’s morning show. 

Congratulations to the following students who were selected as winners for their great posters:

Second grade – Riley Orellano and Ethan Royal

Third grade – Paige Chernisky and Gabrielle Masola

In addition, thanks to funds provided by the Falls-Lenox/ECC PTA, all students were treated to a special assembly featuring a ventriloquist show with an entertaining and educational message to go along with the theme of the week.  Many thanks to PTA, School Pyschologist Mrs. Robin Scott, and the Falls-Lenox staff and students for making this a great week!

OLMSTED FALLS BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTS 2012 OFFICERS, WELCOMES NEWEST MEMBER

Last week, the Olmsted Falls Board of Education held its Annual Organizational Meeting.  At the Organizational Meeting, Mr. James Weisbarth was elected to serve as Board President for calendar year 2012; and Mr. Joe Bertrand was elected to serve another year as Board Vice President.  Board Member Ms. Michelle Theriot will serve as the Board’s legislative liaison for 2012.  We extend both congratulations and thanks to these individuals for taking on these additional responsibilities in the coming year.

The Board of Education also welcomed new Board member Mr. Greg Surtman, who was elected in November 2011.  Mr. Surtman was officially sworn in by District Treasurer Mr. Mark Hullman.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT A SUCCESS; ADDITIONAL PARENT INFORMATION OPPORTUNITIES PLANNED BY HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

Approximately 85 high school parents attended last night financial aid presentation held in the Olmsted Falls High School auditorium.  Numerous appointments are still available in February and March with the high school’s College Now advisor for parents who may be seeking assistance with their financial aid concerns for their seniors next year.  Interested parents should contact Mrs. Laut in the Counseling Office to set up an appointment; her phone number is 440.427.6116.

SAVE THE DATE – On Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the HS Auditorium, an information meeting has been scheduled for parents and students interested in learning more about the Post Secondary Option program (for current 8^th-11^th grade students interested in taking college courses while they are in high school).

MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA FUNDRAISER WINNERS

Just before the winter break, 22 middle school students were treated to a limo lunch ride for a pizza party at Ace’s Grille in North Ridgeville.  These students earned the limo ride by selling at least 18 items in the Middle School PTA’s 2011 bulldog mug fundraiser.  The fundraiser was a success with $4,000.00 being earned to use toward PTA sponsored scholarships, teacher grants and student activities at the Middle School.  A big thanks to all the participants and to PTA for their continuing support of Olmsted Falls Schools!  

OLMSTED FALLS EARLY CHILDHOOD PTA BARGAIN BONANZA

Bargain Bonanza, Early Childhood PTA’s annual resale of gently used children’s clothes, toys, gear and maternity wear, is the group’s biggest fundraiser. The money raised from this public event allows the PTA to offer parties, programs and outings at minimal or no cost to its members.

The sale will be at Olmsted Falls Middle School on March 10, 2012. The registration deadline is February 15, 2012. If you want to sell an item, please return the FORM as soon as possible. LACROSSE SEASON IN OLMSTED FALLS BEGINS SOON – INFORMATION MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT!

SPRING SOCCER REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Olmsted Falls Soccer Association has OPENED soccer registration for the Spring Session. The cost is $60.00 for the first player, $50.00 for the second player and $40.00 for the third player. You can register by either attending our in person registration on Wednesday, January 25, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Olmsted Falls High School cafeteria or by going to our website http://olmstedsoccer.wordpress.com/ . We have improved the online registration and encourage you to use it. You can use your PayPal account to pay for your registration.   The cut off for registrations is Feb 28th. Any registrations received after that date will be charged an additional $10.00, please don’t be late.

In early December, the Olmsted Falls High School Art Department entered 55 individual art pieces, 6 art portfolios and 1 photography portfolio into the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Competition at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

With nearly 1,700 pieces of individual artwork, 25 photography portfolios, and 44 art portfolios submitted, the jurors have awarded 83 Gold Keys, 110 Silver Keys, and 211 Honorable Mentions.

1^ST ANNUAL OFHS PROM DRESS SWAP SALE THIS SATURDAY

The senior class officers of Olmsted Falls High School are sponsoring an innovative Dress Swap Sale event to try to help reduce the overall cost of Prom this year.

Parents, students, alumni and community residents are encouraged to donate your gently used formal or semi-formal dresses and/or ties to the OFHS Guidance office anytime before January 6^th.  Donations accepted in the Guidance Office between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday through January 6^th.  

The Dress Swap Sale will then take place on THIS SATURDAY, January 7^th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at OFHS Library Media Center.  Dresses will be re-sold (for prices ranging from $20 – $30).

Persons donating any item will be entered into a drawing for some yet-to-be determined prizes.  Please contact Mrs. Laut in the Guidance Office at 440.427.6116 with any questions.

DISTRICT HONORS MR. FRANK PEDICINI FOR BOARD SERVICE

Superintendent Dr. Todd Hoadley (right) joined the Olmsted Falls Board of Education in thanking outgoing Board member Mr. Frank Pedicini (left) for his years of dedicated service at last week's Board meeting.

Board of Education member Mr. Frank Pedicini was recognized last Wednesday evening for his 6+ years of service on the Olmsted Falls Board of Education.  Mr. Pedicini’s community service has been characterized by the highest level of ethics and integrity. 

As an active parent and member of the Olmsted community, Mr. Pedicini’s service to the District, both before and during his tenure on the Board of Education, has improved the quality of educational opportunities in our schools and community. 

A resolution of public thanks and recognition was passed by Mr. Pedicini’s fellow Board of Education members at the Board’s monthly meeting in December, which was Mr. Pedicini’s final meeting.  On behalf of the Board, administration, staff and students of Olmsted Falls Schools, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Pedicini for his service and dedication to our District!

1^st WEB REUNION AT OFMS A SUCCESS!

On December 14^th, OFMS hosted their very first WEB REUNION! Our 8^th grade students met with our 6^th grade students to check in on their year.  All students enjoyed a delicious donut while meeting with their original WEB Leaders to discuss their favorite subject, grades, and let us know how they feel as new members of our learning community.

3RD GRADE CHRISTMAS CONCERT A SUCCESS!

Anyone in attendance at last night’s concert presented by the Falls-Lenox 3rd graders in the OFHS Auditorium knows it was an outstanding performance!  It is no surprise with all of the hard work that was put into the show.  Last Friday, the 3rd graders even presented a special dress rehearsal performance in the cafeteria for the 1st and 2nd graders.  To see photos from this fun rehearsal, please click here.

OFHS STUDENTS SPREAD HOLIDAY MUSIC TO YOUNGER BULLDOGS

In what has become a wonderful holiday tradition in Olmsted Falls Schools, music students from Olmsted Falls High School make special visits to the other school buildings to share their talents and spread holiday cheer. 

This special activity is both fun and educational, providing younger students with the opportunity to see both instrumental and vocal music in action.

ECC STUDENT ENRICHMENT FROM COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Mr. and Mrs. Kubat visit the Early Childhood Center (ECC) every week to read to the Kindergarten students.  This week, the students received a special treat from the Kubat family.  They were Santa and Mrs. Claus, and read the “Night Before Christmas.”  Thank you to the Kubat’s and all our community volunteers for donating your valuable time to enrich our student curriculum!

Students at Falls-Lenox Primary School have enjoyed relaxing with a good book around the Christmas tree in the Library Media Center.

5th GRADERS UTILIZE MOBILE LAPTOP CARTS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT

All 5^th Grade classes are currently completing a Social Studies project with the help of mobile laptop carts. The project, which focuses on a specific U.S. region, covers each standard and learning target the 5th Grade Social Studies teachers taught during the first twelve weeks of school (latitude and longitude, reading and creating maps, creating and reading circle graphs, explaining regional interdependence, renewable and non-renewable natural resources, etc.).  This is a great example of how our technology is being put to great use!  For more photos of our 5th graders in their laptop work groups, please click here.

OFHS SWIM TEAM SETS ANOTHER SCHOOL RECORD!

Congrats to senior Greg Porch on his record-breaking swim!

The Varsity Boys Swim and Dive Team defeated Midpark 99-85 to improve to 3-0, and 2-0 in the SWC. 

Senior Greg Porch set a new school record in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:18.71, breaking his own school record of 5:19.47, set last season. 

The Varsity Girls Swim and Dive Team also defeated Midpark 144-38 to improve to 3-0, and 2-0 in the SWC. 

On Saturday 12/17,  three Bulldog swimmers, Greg Porch, Bridget Liddy and Joan Dregalla, qualified for the CSU Viking Invite, which hosted athletes from all over Ohio and PA.  Junior Joan Dregalla and Senior Bridget Liddy swam personal bests and qualified for the Sat. evening finals.  

Both teams will host Brecksville this Thursday.

OFIS FAMILIES AND STUDENTS GIVE GENEROUSLY TO RONALD McDONALD HOUSE

From December 5^th through the 15^th, OFIS collected items for Cleveland’s Ronald McDonald House.  The items collected will help with the upkeep of the House and provide food and other items for families staying there while a young family member is receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.  Members of OFIS Student Council (pictured below) volunteered to stay after school to organize the donations.  Thank you to OFIS students and families for your very generous donations of products and time!   For more information on the Cleveland Ronald McDonald House, please click HERE.

6TH ANNUAL OFHS STUDENT COUNCIL HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE SURPASSES GOAL

This year marked the sixth annual Student Council Holiday Food Drive at OFHS.  Each year, the drive has accumulated between 1500-1800 food items for the Olmsted Falls/Township Food Bank, located at the Olmsted Community Church.  This year, students wanted to establish a new record, and they set a goal for 2,012 items this year.  OFHS students did more than meet their goal – they more than doubled it with a total of 5,011 food items donated!  Kudos to the students, staff and families of Olmsted Falls High School on this great effort!

Paul Katz received his Eagle Court of Honor on Sunday, December 18^th.  Paul, a member of Boy Scout Troop 53, is a Sophomore and also involved in bowling, tennis, skiing, Key Club, and Band.  Congratulations to Paul and his attainment of the highest achievement in Boy Scouts!

1^ST ANNUAL OFHS PROM DRESS SWAP SALE SEEKING COMMUNITY SUPPORT

The senior class officers of Olmsted Falls High School are sponsoring an innovative Dress Swap Sale event to try to help reduce the overall cost of Prom this year.

Parents, students, alumni and community residents are encouraged to donate your gently used formal or semi-formal dresses and/or ties to the OFHS Guidance office anytime before January 6^th.  Donations accepted in the Guidance Office between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday from now until January 6^th.  

The Dress Swap Sale will then take place on Saturday, January 7^th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at OFHS Library Media Center.  Dresses will be re-sold (for prices ranging from $20 – $30).

Persons donating any item will be entered into a drawing for some yet-to-be determined prizes.  Please contact Mrs. Laut in the Guidance Office at 440.427.6116 with any questions.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Thursday, January 12th, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Olmsted Falls Lacrosse Association Information and Registration Night, Middle School Cafetorium.  The Olmsted Falls Lacrosse Association is excited to kick-off our third season!  In the first two seasons the program has grown from 22 boys playing lacrosse to 95 boys and girls learning and participating in the fastest growing sport in the United States.  In addition to the same programs offered last year, we are pleased to offer a 10 week developmental program for 1st and 2nd grade boys and girls.   Join us for one hour and learn about the sport of  LACROSSE — the “Fastest Game On Two Feet” —and decide if the non-stop action and excitement is worth a try!   Find out more online at olmstedfallslax.com or email at olmstedfallslacrosse@yahoo.com.  To download the informational flyer click HERE.

RECOUNTS COMPLETE – P.I. LEVY PASSES BY 7 VOTES!

For those who may not have already heard the news, the recount for the District’s P.I. Levy in Lorain County was completed last Thursday (12/8/11) and there was NO CHANGE to the official vote counts.  With the recounts in both Cuyahoga and Lorain counties now complete, and no changes found in either count, the District can now report the official passage of our 5-Year P.I. Levy by the margin of 7 votes!   (Final Combined Vote Count:  4,073 YES votes / 4,066 NO votes)

Sincere thanks and appreciation to our parents, staff and community for your continuing support of the Olmsted Falls School District.  This has been a true demonstration of democracy in action and a true example of how every vote counts!  THANK YOU AGAIN! 

WINTER BREAK SCHEDULE

Please remember that this year’s Winter Break begins next Thursday, December 22^nd and runs through Tuesday, January 3^rd.  The last day of school prior to Winter Break is Wednesday, December 21^st.  School will resume on Wednesday, January 4^th.

FALLS-LENOX FIRST GRADERS DONATE TOYS FOR LOCAL FAMILIES

First graders from the classrooms of Mrs. Kostraba, Mrs. DeLuca, Mrs. Burk, Mrs. Vasco, Dr. Kolozvary participated in a holiday gift drive this week to benefit Christians In Action, a local non-profit organization which assist Olmsted families.   The toy drive was organized as a service project for the students to reinforce discussions about ways to show compassion and caring to others, as well as, ways to give back to those that are less fortunate.  Kudos to our first grade teachers and students for this generous effort to help local families!

OFHS LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR ANNUAL APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

Olmsted Falls High School held its annual Local Scholarship Sponsor Appreciation Brunch last Friday in the High School Media Center.  Guests were treated to a buffet breakfast and enjoyed a special holiday performance by the High School’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

In addition, Bulldog alumnus Caitlyn John returned to her alma mater to personally express special thanks to the sponsors who supported her this year.  Caitlyn is currently studying Journalism at Ohio University.  Click HERE for more photos of this event.

Last year, these local sponsors provided nearly $125,000 through 234 scholarships for members of the Class of 2011.  Our District extends its continued gratitude to all of these individuals, businesses and organizations, for their generous support of our Bulldog graduates!

ENDOWMENT AND ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW BOARD PRESIDENT

Holly McFadden was recently elected President of the Olmsted Falls Endowment and Alumni Association.  She has been a Trustee on the Board for seven years and is currently the Chair of the Fundraising and Golf Outing Committees.  In addition, Holly is a member of the Scholarship Committee that selects outstanding Seniors to receive one of twenty-two scholarships administered by the Association.  Scholarships distributed by the Alumni Association in 2011 totaled $22,400.

Holly is employed at the Board Office in the Treasurer’s Department, a position she’s held since 2003.  She and her husband, Jay, have two boys, a Sophomore and a 6th Grader, who attend Olmsted Falls City Schools. Holly is very active in the schools and has been the Fundraising Chair for the Falls-Lenox, Intermediate, and Middle School PTA’s.  She also teaches PSR classes at St. Mary’s.  Congratulations to Holly and we wish her much success in her new post!

Many thanks to the Olmsted Township Police Department for bringing the “Officer Phil”  Team Up For A Safer Community” program to Falls-Lenox last week.  Students enjoyed a special assembly about important safety rules.  Children also received a free “Team Up” activity and coloring book.  Thank you again to the Olmsted Township Police!

AUTOMATIC RECOUNT FOR CUYAHOGA COUNTY COMPLETED THIS MORNING – NO CHANGE TO OFFICIAL LEVY VOTE COUNTS; LORAIN COUNTY RECOUNT TOMORROW

As reported on last week’s blog, the extremely narrow margin of passage for the recent District’s P.I. Levy vote triggered an automatic recount in both Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. 

The recount for Cuyahoga County took place this morning at 9:30 a.m.   We are pleased to share that the vote count  results from Cuyahoga County held and there were no changes to the official Cuyahoga County vote count reported last week (4,020 FOR / 3,922 AGAINST).

The recount for the single Lorain County precinct will take place tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.  Official vote counts for Lorain County were 53 FOR  / 144 AGAINST.  We are very hopeful that the Lorain County results will hold as well.

NOTE:  We plan to update the blog tomorrow afternoon with final confirmation on the Lorain count, and the final results for our issue.

We remain hopeful that the P.I. Levy’s seven vote lead overall will hold and that we will be able to begin to put these funds to work after the first of the year.  Thank you again for your continuing support of Olmsted Falls Schools!

OFHS SOCCER TEAM EARNS AWARDS ON AND OFF FIELD

Following a season where accolades were aplenty for its play on the field, the Olmsted Falls men’s soccer team was honored for its work in the classroom with both the Ohio High School Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association All-Ohio Team Academic Award and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award.

The Olmsted Falls men posted an astounding team grade point average of 3.55 en route to earning the program’s fourth All-Ohio Award and the second NCSAA Award in the past five years. A total of only 135 programs nation-wide earned NSCAA Team Academic Award honors with GPAs of 3.00 or higher.

Seniors Tyler Knapp and Tim McClaren were placed on the Ohio High School Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association All-Ohio Academic Team for maintaining a 3.7 GPA.

Senior Tim McClaren also earned the The National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School Senior Excellence Award for his outstanding play on the field, his accomplishments in the classroom, and the sportsmanship and leadership displayed throughout the season.

Under fifth-year Head Coach James Walchanowicz, the Bulldogs men finished the 2011 campaign at 7-11 overall and finished the season with a heart breaking 2-1 loss to Strongsville in the Sectional Championship game.  Earning ALL SWC Honorable Mention were Juniors James Bildstein and Brad Sommer.  Earning ALL SWC Second Team was Junior Jon Levi, and earning ALL SWC FIRST Team was Senior Tim McClaren.  Tim McClaren was also named ALL SWC ACADEMIC SCHOLAR.  Seniors Kyle Barber and Brian Bildstein, Junior Jon Levin, Sophomore Michael Payne, and  Freshman Christian Klein earned Honorable Mention Greater Cleveland honors Division I.  Earning ALL Greater Cleveland Second Team was Senior Tim McClaren.

ACADEMIC TEAMS CONTINUE TO SCORE WELL IN TOURNAMENTS

This past weekend, the OFHS Academic Team traveled to Clayton, OH (just west of Dayton) for the 6th Annual Rowdy Raider NAQT Qualifier Tournament.  There were Academic Teams from the Tri-State Area participating (Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio).  After the second round robin of play, our A Team was in a three-way tie and had to play their way through a playoff 10 question packet against Sycamore HS (Cincinnati) to meet Warren G. Harding HS in a second playoff 10 question packet (which they won).  This gave them the opportunity to play Northmont HS (Clayton, OH) for the championship.  Our A-Team (Sohan Vartak, Brad Sevcik, Marty Mendenhall, and Nathan Seese) finished 12-1 on the day on their way to capturing 1st place overall in a very tough field.

Our B-Team (Tom Hoy, Richie Mendenhall, Nick Wickham, and Andy Nageotte) went 5-5 on the day while C-Team (Emily Burland, Julie Wu, Xavier Riviera, and Conner Arendec) finished 5-5 on the day as well.  It was another good weekend for Olmsted Falls Quiz Bowl!  Thank you for your continued support of the Academic Team!

STUDENT COUNCIL BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS!

The OFHS Student Council members, working with Olmsted Falls School District Nurse Carol Meszaros, sponsored a blood drive on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Olmsted Falls High School.  

Thanks to their efforts and the efforts of volunteers, the American Red Cross was able to collect 71 pints of blood for needed patient care.  Of those 82 presenting donors, 45 donated blood for the first time.   A considerable amount of work goes into every blood drive and precious lives have been saved or sustained as a direct result.  Thanks for your effort and great job OFHS!  

SPIRIT OF THE SEASON DEMONSTRATED BY DISTRICT STAFF

The High School Kitchen Staff adopted two families instead of exchanging gifts with each other this year.  Teresa Haun, Diane Drespling, Marlene Wilhelm, Helga Allen, Pat Binggeli, Veronica Kelly and Laurie LaGruth are pictured below along with their very generous gifts.

The Food Service Department, pictured below,  took up a food collection at its recent staff meeting to donate to the Christians In Action Food Bank, an organization that helps needy families in the Olmsted Falls Community.

Thank you to both groups for showing the community the true Spirit of the Season!

OFMS 6^TH GRADERS GRADUATE FROM D.A.R.E. PROGRAM

D.A.R.E stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.  As part of the D.A.R.E. program, Officer Bob Swope instructed students to act in their own best interest when facing high-risk, low-gain choices and to resist peer pressure in making personal choices regarding tobacco smoking, drug abuse, alcohol consumption and peer pressure in social networks.  The D.A.R.E program has received numerous accolades and awards for helping keep kids off drugs.  Thanks to Officer Bob Swope for his all his time and efforts with our students!

OFMS WEB LEADERS HOST MOVIE NIGHT

On Thursday, December 1st the Middle School 8th Grade WEB Leaders hosted Movie Night for all 6th grade students.  Students enjoyed hot chocolate and homemade cookies, thanks to the Intramural Mentoring Program, all while watching the hilarious comedy Zoo Keeper!  Thank you to all who participated!

RETIRED STAFF GATHER FOR ANNUAL HOLIDAY LUNCHEON

The Olmsted Falls Alumni Association hosted its annual holiday luncheon for retired bulldog staff members this past Monday at OFIS.  More than 50 retired bulldogs were in attendance at this popular event, sponsored by the Olmsted Falls Board of Education.

Retired staff in attendance enjoyed a wonderful hot lunch prepared by Mrs. Tabar and her staff.  The lunch was served expertly by Mr. Ryan’s OWA students from OFHS.  Guests were also treated to a variety of  music performed by Mr. Patterson’s 8^th Grade Singers, Mrs. Kiedrowski’s 8^th Grade Choir, and Mr. Gulden’s Jazz Band.  The finale was a tour of the new OFIS building provided by principal, Mr. Svec.

LOCAL SISTERS APPEAR TOGETHER IN PLAYHOUSE SQUARE’S PRODUCTION OF “A CHRISTMAS CAROL”

The Nelson siblings, Courtney (8^th grade), Cameron (5^th grade), Cassidy (2^nd grade), and Carly (Kindergarten) – all students of the Olmsted Falls School District – will be performing in the play “A Christmas Carol” from Friday, December 2^nd through Friday, December 23^rd at the Great Lakes Theater, Playhouse Square.

Three of the four sisters have been in the play before, but this is the first time all four will be in the production together, which makes this a special holiday season for the family.  The company cast 9 children and one understudy in an audition process which consisted of singing and reading from the script.  This is a very special honor, as well as a commitment of hard work and dedication.  The girls will be performing in 30 shows overall – including one performance next week being attended by Courtney’s fellow 8th graders from Olmsted Falls Middle School!  For more information and to order tickets, please visit the Great Lakes Theater website  by clicking HERE.  Good luck and have a great time girls!

1^ST ANNUAL OFHS PROM DRESS SWAP SALE SEEKING COMMUNITY SUPPORT

The senior class officers of Olmsted Falls High School are sponsoring an innovative Dress Swap Sale event to try to help reduce the overall cost of Prom this year.

Parents, students, alumni and community residents are encouraged to donate your gently used formal or semi-formal dresses and/or ties to the OFHS Guidance office anytime before January 6^th.  Donations accepted in the Guidance Office between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday from now until January 6^th.  Additionally a weekend drop-off opportunity has been scheduled for THIS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10^th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the OFHS Library Media Center.

The Dress Swap Sale will then take place on Saturday, January 7^th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at OFHS Library Media Center.  Dresses will be re-sold (for prices ranging from $20 – $30).

OLMSTED TOWNSHIP FUNDRAISER PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY TO SHOP WITH A COP

MUSIC ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISERS CONTINUE

Coming in February, with the help of Shaker’s IGA, students will have another chance to raise funds for trips with our annual Hoagie Sale!  Pre-sales will be available a few weeks prior to the Super Bowl.  Volunteers will be needed to create these amazing sandwiches on Saturday, February 4^th.  Please watch for details.

According to official election results certified yesterday at separate meetings of the Board of Elections in both Cuyahoga and Lorain counties, the Olmsted Falls School District’s 2.8 Mill 5-year P.I. Levy has passed by a margin of 7 votes.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections conducted its formal meeting to certify the official results of the November 8th General Election at 11:30 a.m. yesterday morning (11/29/11).  With all valid votes from the District’s 20 precincts in Cuyahoga County now officially counted, the total number of votes FOR the District’s P.I. Levy is 4,020 and the total number of votes AGAINST the levy is 3,922.

The Lorain County Board of Elections conducted its formal meeting to certify its official results of the November 8th General Election at 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon (11/29/11).  With all valid votes now counted in the District’s single Lorain County precinct, the total number of votes FOR the District’s P.I. Levy is 53 and the total number of votes AGAINST the levy is 144.

Combining the official Cuyahoga County FOR/AGAINST totals with official Lorain County FOR/AGAINST totals gives us a combined total of 4,073 YES votes and 4,066 NO votes.  It is from this combined total that we get our current passage by 7 votes.

This extremely close election has triggered an automatic recount (required when the margin is less than 1/2 of 1%).  At this time, the recount for Cuyahoga County has been tentatively set for Monday, December 5th.  The District will have more information on the Cuyahoga County recount as well as the recount for Lorain County in the next couple of days.

Olmsted Falls School District wishes to express sincere gratitude to parents and residents of the Olmsted community for supporting this important P.I. Levy.

We also want to acknowledge all of the parents and staff members who joined the Pride In Olmsted Schools campaign in support of this critical levy.

We will continue to provide updates as the recount process proceeds.  We are hopeful that a recount will maintain the votes in our favor.

OLMSTED FALLS AMONG 23 OHIO SCHOOL DISTRICTS NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS AP HONOR ROLL BY COLLEGE BOARD

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) announced Wednesday that 23 of the state’s school districts have been named to the Second Annual AP Honor Roll of the College Board.  Olmsted Falls School District is proud to be among this elite list of school districts.  Only 5 other school districts in Cuyahoga County were named this year.

ECC STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

Mrs. Strawser’s kindergarteners celebrated Thanksgiving by dressing as Pilgrims. They learned motions and sounds to reenact the First Thanksgiving Story for the ECC office staff.  They also enjoyed making Friendship Fruit Salad for their feast.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS SERVE UP ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FEAST

In what has become an annual tradition as a way to say thank you to teachers and staff, Mrs. Casterline and her students at Olmsted Falls Middle School prepared a full Thanksgiving feast complete with a turkey and all the trimmings.  Staff members, including retired teachers, enjoyed the Thanksgiving dinner, which is prepared and served in the Middle School’s Life Skills classroom, on Monday, Nov. 21st just before the Thanksgiving break.

Preparations for the feast begin in early November and provide many opportunities for learning along the way.  Math skills are practiced as students determine how many pounds of turkey will be needed to feed the large group and how many turkeys will be needed.  The same planning and calculations go into determining the ingredients needed for the homemade applesauce, pumpkin pies, brownies and famous secret-recipe sticky buns.

Many volunteers join students in the effort to create this special feast each year.  This year, Mrs. Casterline’s class wishes to thank the following people who came in on Saturday before the feast to help begin the meal preparations:  Mrs. Cole and daughter Alyssa (a junior at the high school) and son Austin, Mr. Forkapa and daughter Rusha, Mr. Ramirez and son Alejandro, Mr. Matson and son Jacob, Mrs. Zajac and son Michael, Mrs. Stevens and daughter Sarah, Mrs. Gabel and son Brett, teacher Mrs. Klayko, and Middle School students Kyle Sheehan, Marcella Issa, Justin Laurenti and Zoe Clayburg.

Thanks also go out to:  Mrs. Klayko for the beautiful flowers for the tables, Mrs. Stevens for her generous donation, Mrs. Cole and daughter Alyssa for help above and beyond, Mrs. Cihlar (retired preschool teacher), Alena Wapperer who helped make mashed potatoes (35 pounds worth!), Matt Caine who took a day off work to cut the turkeys for us, and, of course, Mr. Kurz!

All of these helpers, and those who attend each year, help create a lifelong lesson for students!

OFIS CHESS CLUB STARTED THIS WEEK – STILL TIME TO SIGN UP!

The OFIS Chess Club started this week with about 60 kids playing.

There is still room for more!  Interested 4^th and 5^th grade students should consider joining the fun.

The OFIS Chess Club will skip next week as K-Kids will be in session, and then the Chess Club will start up again the following week, before school.

OFIS STUDENTS HELP SET GUINESS WORLD RECORD FOR SPORT CUP STACKING

Students at OFIS joined tens of thousands of students across the nation before Thanksgiving for the 2011 STACK UP! event sponsored by the World Sport Stacking Association.  This annual event seeks to increase the record each year for the most people sport stacking at multiple locations in one day.

4th and 5th Graders participated in a variety of timed stacking events during their physical education classes.  This fun and fast-paced event was coordinated by Physical Education teacher Ms. Kristina Robinson.

OFHS ACADEMIC TEAM PERFORMS WELL AT HISTORY BOWL AND BEE COMPETITION

On Saturday, November 19th, the Academic Team competed in the History Bowl and Bee at Boardman High School.  This competition consists of two parts: the bowl which is a team event, and the bee which is an individual event.

Congratulations Sohan Vartak, Marty Mendenhall, Brad Sevcik, and Nathan Seese on winning the History Bowl and qualifying for the National History Bowl in Washington, D.C.!

In the History Bee, Sohan, Brad, Marty, and Nathan all made the quarter finals, and Sohan, Marty, and Nathan all made the semi-finals. The final was between Michael Coates of Warren G. Harding and David Kramer of Solon, with Michael Coates winning.

The JV History Bee final was between Andy Nageotte of Olmsted Falls and George Clark of Sebring with Andy winning the JV Bee. Zach Buchta finished the JV Bee in 4th place (as an 8th grader).

All of these individuals qualified for the National History Bee in Washington, D.C.  It was a good weekend for Olmsted Falls Quiz Bowl!

Fridays in December, 7 p.m., and New Year’s Eve, 7 p.m. – OPA Bash.   Olmsted Performing Arts is kicking off the holiday season with OPA Bash — A night of fun for kids ages 1-13  every Friday at 7 p.m. in December, as well as New Year’s Eve.  While you’re gone, your kids will be with experienced staff who will keep your children safe, and make sure they have fun! We will have Christmas crafts, movies, acting games, board games, and a Christmas Dance Party! The Olmsted Performing Arts Dance team will be performing at various local venues this holiday season.   They will appear at the  Cub Scout Pack 102′s Santa’s Secret Shop at Falls-Lenox (see above) at 11am on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, at Dillard’s Family & Friend’s Event at Great Northern Mall on Sunday, Dec. 4th.  They will also perform at St. Mary of the Falls’ Angel Tree Party, Emerald Village, and Ronald McDonald this month.

Friday, December 2nd, 7 p.m. and Saturday, December 3rd, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. - A Christmas Story performed by Olmsted Performing Arts  Main Stage.  Follow Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun in the face of warnings that “You’ll shoot your eye out.”  All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, and A Christmas Story is sure to be a holiday favorite!    Performances will be in the 1,200 seat auditorium at Journey Church, 6941 Columbia Road, Olmsted Falls.  Advance tickets are available through noon on December 1^st at www.olmstedperformingarts.com and are $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 4-12 and seniors.  Add $2/ticket at the door.  Lap sitting children ages 3 and under are free.  Plus, have hot cocoa and cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus and build your own gingerbread house to take home at our special preshow event ninety minutes before each performance.  This event will sell out, so reserve your tickets early!  Tickets for children are $15 each!  Children must be accompanied by an adult, but adults do not need to purchase a ticket.

Sunday, December 4th, 5 p.m. – The Olmsted Falls Parks & Recreation Board presents its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Village Green.  We will have Christmas caroling with the Olmsted Falls Middle School Singers and Santa will make an appearance!  As usual, Boy Scout Troop 201 will serve  hot chocolate.  We are asking attendees to please bring a nonperishable food item to donate to our local Christians in Action food pantry.  As a thank you, Angelina’s Pizza is donating their yummy warm cinnamon rolls for attendees to enjoy.  Dress for the weather!

VETERANS DAY CEREMONIES AT FALLS-LENOX

Each Falls-Lenox learning community participated in a special Veteran’s Day ceremony last Friday.  Students and staff were joined by local veterans, family and friends for these special tributes to those that have served our country.  Army Veteran Jerry Gobble helped raise the flag during the ceremonies.  Other Veterans who participated in special activities around the District were John Somodi, Gordon Hall, Ken Fox, Jim Bartell, Eric Bobal, Dave Zeih, and our very own “Mr. George” Elioff.

ECC STUDENTS RECEIVE A SPECIAL VISIT

U.S. Army Capt. Michael McClelland (OFHS Class of 2000 alumnus) visited ECC on Friday to talk about his experiences in the Army.  Thank you for your service Captain McClelland!

MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES SPECIAL VETERAN’S DAY VISIT

Commander Mark Bobal spoke to Middle School students about his experiences in keeping water travel safe for passengers and his role as second in command to Coast Guard operations during the 9/11 attacks in New York City.  Commander Bobal has served in the US Coast Guard for his entire career and is currently working for the Coast Guard as a civilian. Thank you Commander Bobal for your service!

Residents of Olmsted Falls, Command Sgt. Major Bartell (below right) and Major Fox  (below left)  spoke to the students about their careers in the Army.  Highlights included their roles in the Iraq War.  Students were able to view personal photos, listen to stories about the people our Army veterans have helped and missions they completed, and had the opportunity to ask questions.  Thanks to these Veterans for your service!

REVOLUTIONARY WAR SPEAKER VISITS MIDDLE SCHOOL

This is Mr. Zeih’s 8th year presenting to the students of Olmsted Falls Middle School about the life of a British soldier in the 13 American colonies prior to the American Revolution.  Mr. Zeih is retired from the teaching profession, but continues to educate through his revolutionary presentations!  Mr. Zeih is a former Fairview High School teacher of Middle School principal Mr. Kurz and Middle School U.S. History teacher Mrs. Cibulskas from Fairview High School.

Mrs. Cibulskas’ 8^th Grade U.S. History class wrote thank you cards to Veterans in the Cleveland VA Hospital.  Cards contained quotes such as “Freedom is Not Free” and personal messages written by the students thanking a Veteran for his/her service and dedication to our country.

**P.I. LEVY UPDATE**:  OFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS TO BE CERTIFIED NOVEMBER 28TH

Olmsted Falls School District continues to wait for the final vote counts from last week’s incredibly close election.  For now, the unofficial count (including precinct results from both Cuyahoga County and Lorain County) remains at 3,998 FOR and 3,994 AGAINST the 5-year P.I. Levy – with the 5-year P.I. issue leading by just four favorable votes.

The latest information that we have regarding the status of our ballot issue is that there are 182 provisional ballots that still need to be verified / counted for the Cuyahoga County precincts.  This should take place between now and next Tuesday, November 22nd.  Then, due to the holiday, the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections will meet on November 28, 2011 for the formal certification meeting.  (We do not have details on number of possible provisional ballots outstanding for our District’s one Lorain County precinct.)

We will continue to keep you updated as to any further result updates that may become available between now and November 28th.   Once official results are certified, it is highly likely that an automatic recount will go into effect.  Automatic recounts are done when the margin is less than 1/2 of 1%.  So, it may even go beyond November 28th before the final official result is known.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC TEAM MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Congratulations to the Olmsted Falls Middle School Academic Team who participated in their first competition this past  Saturday at Hawken School. The Varsity A team placed second overall; team members were Zach Buchta, Claire Barratt, Eli Tomasch, and Jake Dahlinger.  The JV B team was undefeated and took second place as well; members were Bennett Graham, Joselyn Rabbitt, Stephanie Scroth, Nick Romonowski, and Eric Andrews. The JV A team also took 3^rd place;  members were Jacob Krucek, Ouen Mali, Maggie Backus, and Molly McCafferty. Also playing at the varsity level were Kacie Burton, Logan Petruziello, Alex Kho, and Jack Wu.

This was a great first effort by the Middle School team and they are to be congratulated on their hard work!

WRESTLING PROGRAM SPONSORS 4^th ANNUAL “BRING A RAKE” DAY

The Olmsted Falls Varsity Wrestling wrapped up the preseason by raking yards of program supporters in the community who can use the extra help.  This year twenty wrestlers participated in the event and we thank them for their service!

The Olmsted Falls Music Association would like to thank all of our volunteers that helped sell Krispy Kreme donuts at the home football games, including the one at Avon Lake! Never fear, the fun is not over.  We will be selling donuts at all music concerts!  The next opportunities will be November 10^th for 7^th and 8^th grade Choir, November 16^th for 7^th and 8^th grade Band, and the November 17^th Falls-Lenox Concert (at the High School).  Please contact Sam Arendec, sarendec@sbcglobal.net, if you would like be a part of the Krispy Kreme Krew!

The High School Choir and Band will once again be selling Fraser Fir Christmas Trees  on November 26^th and 27^th in front of the High School.  For trees under 8’ the cost will be $40 and $50 for those over 8’.  All trees are cut fresh and last a very long time.  If you are interested in purchasing a tree, please see your favorite High School Choir or Band student to receive a voucher.  This voucher will ensure that the student receives $10 in credit.  Feel free to come to the lot even without a voucher.  Students working the lot will receive funding as well.  All proceeds will be used for future choir and band trips.

Coming in February, with the help of Shaker’s IGA, students will have another chance to raise funds for trips with our annual Hoagie Sale!  Pre-sales will be available a few weeks prior to the Super Bowl.  Volunteers will be needed to create these amazing sandwiches on Saturday, February 4^th.  Please watch for details.

We want to thank all who attended November’s OFMA meeting!  Great ideas for our programming and scrumptious cupcakes were shared by all!  If you have a student involved in music, please join us for our next meeting on December 7^th at 7 pm in the High School Choir room!

OFHS BASEBALL FUNDRAISER ENDS TOMORROW!

Baseball hats make a great holiday gift and are a hot item for the kids. There are 3 styles:  1) Our traditional Navy game hat with a gold/white “OF” on front and Paw Print on back; 2) Our brand new for 2012 alternative game hat – White hat with navy/gold “OF”, navy brim, and paw print on back; 3) Snapback hat – navy with gold brim and gold/white OF/Paw.

All hats come with a “ProVisor” flat brim and are custom moldable to retain their curve once bent. The game hats are flex fit with 3 sizes from which to choose.  In addition all hats are made with performance fabric called Dryve.  The Snapback is also a Dryve fabric, not wool, as it is listed on the website and order form.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Beginning November 6^th – Railroad Crossing at Sprague Road will be closed for two weeks (tentatively…hoping for a one week closure).  During the time of closure, some of our bus arrival times will be slightly affected due to having student pick-ups on both sides of that particular railroad.  We have made adjustments to reduce the impact, but are expecting both arrival times at school and some drop off times to be delayed.  We ask for your understanding during this time of closure, and we will do our best to get everyone to their destinations quickly.  Please contact Heath Krakowiak, Transportation Supervisor, at 427-6350 or hkrakowiak@ofcs.net with questions.

November 17th, 7 p.m., November 18^th, 7 p.m., November 19^th,  7 p.m. -  Olmsted Performing Arts Main Stage will perform the musical The Wizard of Oz.  Saturday matinee is SOLD OUT so we’ve added a Thursday evening pre-show at 7 p.m.  Come watch our actors fly and a “tornado” hit the stage as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto travel the universe of Dorothy’s imagination.  Performances will be in the 1,200 seat auditorium at Journey Church, 6941 Columbia Road, Olmsted Falls.  Tickets are now on sale!  Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children (ages 4-12) and seniors (60+).  Lap sitting children ages 3 and under are free.  Add $2/ticket at the door.  Advance tickets are available through noon on November 17^th at www.olmstedperformingarts.com.  The show will feature characters “flying” and special effects such as fireballs!  Tickets are selling fast.

November 24th, 11 p.m., November 25th, 7 p.m.,  every Friday in December, 7 p.m., and New Year’s Eve, 7 p.m. – OPA Bash.   Olmsted Performing Arts is kicking off the holiday season with OPA Bash — A night of fun for kids ages 1-13 beginning 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving night for those Black Friday sales and continuing every Friday at 7 p.m. in December, as well as New Year’s Eve.  While you’re gone, your kids will be with experienced staff who will keep your children safe, and make sure they have fun! We will have Christmas crafts, movies, acting games, board games, and a Christmas Dance Party! As of this morning, UNOFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS indicate 50.03%  FOR the 5-year P.I. Levy and 49.97% AGAINST the issue in yesterday’s election. The unofficial count (including precinct results from both Cuyahoga County and Lorain County) is currently at 3,998 FOR and 3,994 AGAINST.

It is important to stress that there are still some absentee and provisional ballots to be counted, so these unofficial numbers will change.  Additionally, this slim margin will also trigger an automatic recount.  (Automatic recounts are done when the margin is less than 1/2 of 1%.)  So, it may be a few weeks before the final results of this important election is determined.

Olmsted Falls School District is grateful to the Olmsted communities for their increased support of this important P.I. Levy.  Support for the issue increased substantially from May, when the issue was defeated with 54% of votes cast against it and 46% of votes cast in favor.

The District wishes to express sincere appreciation for the efforts of parents and staff members who volunteered countless hours to help educate our community about the P.I. Levy.  Thank you for your personal time and support!

We remain hopeful that the final results will be in our favor, and will continue to provide updates as the ballot count continues.

CONGRATS TO OUR BULLDOG FOOTBALL TEAM!

The OFHS Varsity Football Team finished the season last Friday with a 6-1 record in the Southwest Conference and a 7-4 record overall.  The team was given a spirited send off by the community on Friday afternoon as they departed for the first round play-off game against Toledo Central Catholic.  While our Bulldogs were defeated Friday night, they gave it their all and have much to be proud of this season.

Eleven members of the OFHS varsity football team have just been selected, by SWC coaches, for the All-Conference team.  Congratulations to these All-conference athletes:

First Team Offense – Drew Meketa, Eric Meehan, Nolan Brandt and Brennan Laird

FALLS-LENOX/EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER PTA SPONSORS DONUTS WITH DADS

In an effort to increase family engagement and boost PTA membership, the PTA held its annual “Donuts with Dads” event on November 3^rd and 4^th at the Falls-Lenox Cafeteria.  Donuts and beverages were served to over 580 Dads and students, making this a very successful PTA event.

OFHS MASQUERS TO PRESENT HARRY POTTER PARODY THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY

Olmsted Falls High School Masquers is proud to present Sally Cotter and the Censored Stone, a parody of Harry Potter, on Friday and Saturday, November 11th and 12th. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

OFHS CHEERLEADERS TAKE FIRST PLACE IN SWC CHEERLEADING COMPETITION

On Monday night, the Olmsted Falls High School Cheerleaders competed in the annual South Western Conference Cheerleading competition. 

After performing an outstanding routine, the Bulldog Cheerleaders took home first place in the entire SWC conference. 

Also, Senior Marcie Brasdovich won the award for best jumps in the SWC, as well as the award for Scholar Athlete. 

Thank you to all the parents, students and fans that came to support the OFHS Cheerleaders on this tremendous accomplishment.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION SESSION ON TEEN DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE IS THIS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH

The Middle School PTA will be hosting an informational session on the topic of Teen Depression and Suicide Risk Factors on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 7pm in the middle school library media center.  The session will review the symptoms of youth depression and warning signs of suicide.  One of the school counselors will be present to address this topic.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA MUG SALE – DEADLINE FOR ORDERS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH

There are 3 styles:  1) Our traditional Navy game hat with a gold/white “OF” on front and Paw Print on back; 2) Our brand new for 2012 alternative game hat – White hat with navy/gold “OF”, navy brim, and paw print on back; 3) Snapback hat – navy with gold brim and gold/white OF/Paw.

All hats come with a “ProVisor” flat brim and are custom moldable to retain their curve once bent. The game hats are flex fit with 3 sizes from which to choose.  In addition all hats are made with performance fabric called Dryve.  The Snapback is also a Dryve fabric, not wool, as it is listed on the website and order form.

OFIS PTA FUNDRAISER – ONE-DAY PICK-UP – TODAY, NOVEMBER 9 FROM 3:00-7:00P.M.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the OFIS cookie dough fundraiser!  Your support will help pay for field trips, assemblies, field day, right-to-read-week, the 5^th grade luau and the many other activities sponsored by the OFIS PTA.  Our pick-up day for the cookie dough is scheduled for TODAY:  November 9 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the OFIS cafeteria.  This date was purposely chosen to make it easier for pick-up as it coincides with our first Parent-Teacher Conference night.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Vickie Lofton at tigmic1@sbcglobal.net.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Beginning November 6^th – Railroad Crossing at Sprague Road will be closed for two weeks (tentatively…hoping for a one week closure).  During the time of closure, some of our bus arrival times will be slightly affected due to having student pick-ups on both sides of that particular railroad.  We have made adjustments to reduce the impact, but are expecting both arrival times at school and some drop off times to be delayed.  We ask for your understanding during this time of closure, and we will do our best to get everyone to their destinations quickly.  Please contact Heath Krakowiak, Transportation Supervisor, at 427-6350 or hkrakowiak@ofcs.net

November 18^th, 7 p.m., November 19^th, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. -  Olmsted Performing Arts Main Stage will perform the musical The Wizard of Oz.  Come watch our actors fly and a “tornado” hit the stage as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto travel the universe of Dorothy’s imagination.  Performances will be in the 1,200 seat auditorium at Journey Church, 6941 Columbia Road, Olmsted Falls.  Tickets are now on sale!  Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children (ages 4-12) and seniors (60+).  Lap sitting children ages 3 and under are free.  Add $2/ticket at the door.  Advance tickets are available through noon on November 17^th at www.olmstedperformingarts.com.  The show will feature characters “flying” and special effects such as fireballs!  Tickets are selling fast.

November 19th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Holiday Craft and Home Fair.  Come enjoy this uniquely fun and entertaining shopping extravaganza for the whole family at the Olmsted Community Center, 8170 Mapleway Drive, Olmsted Falls. There will be Crafters, Exhibitors, Bake Sale, Magic, Balloon Art, Face Painting, Live Music Performances, Raffles and Children’s Make-it Take-it Craft Room. November 24th, 11 p.m., November 25th, 7 p.m.,  every Friday in December, 7 p.m., and New Year’s Eve, 7 p.m. – OPA Bash.   Olmsted Performing Arts is kicking off the holiday season with OPA Bash — A night of fun for kids ages 1-13 beginning 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving night for those Black Friday sales and continuing every Friday at 7 p.m. in December, as well as New Year’s Eve.  While you’re gone, your kids will be with experienced staff who will keep your children safe, and make sure they have fun! We will have Christmas crafts, movies, acting games, board games, and a Christmas Dance Party! Also, on November 25th and December 23^rd, we will have Christmas cookie decorating!  The location is the Olmsted Community Center, 8170 Mapleway Drive, Olmsted Falls.  More details are available at www.olmstedperformingarts.com.
