STEVE HARPSTER SPEAKS TO STUDENTS AT FALLS-LENOX

Author and illustrator Steve Harpster spoke to the students on Monday, February 27th as part of Right to Read Week at Falls-Lenox.  Mr. Harpster’s presentation began by discussing a surprising connection he has with the school – he drew the artwork for the “Kelso’s Choices” program taught at Falls-Lenox!  He also showed his artwork from first grade to present to emphasize the role of imagination and “practice” to succeed.

The second portion of his presentation was interactive.  Students brought pencils and paper so they could follow along as Steve drew characters on his iPad.  He showed them how to draw pictures from numbers and letters – such as a shark from the number 4, a sea turtle from the number 10, and a monster from the letter “S”.    At the conclusion of the presentation, Steve asked everyone to show him their favorite drawing as they exited.  Students and teachers alike proudly complied.  Afterwards, many said it was one of the best presentations they had seen.

Contest winners with Steve Harpster; Pictured left to right: Giana Formica, Maxine Baker, Steve Harpster, Nick Shopp, Lindsey LaPinta, Eddie Goetz, and Taylor Connelly.

Steve generously offered to do his presentation at no charge to the school or the PTA, and 30% of the book sale goes back to Falls-Lenox.  A flyer was sent home a few weeks ago, however it can be viewed HERE .  The books “Drawing Animals with Numbers”, “Drawing Monsters with Letters”, and “Drawing Sea Animals with Numbers” may be purchased for $6 each through March 5th.  Steve signs each book and draws an original picture on the inside cover.  Parents and students may also view Steve’s instructional videos at Harptoons.com

PRESCHOOLERS VISIT OLMSTED FALLS POST OFFICE

Preschool students from the Early Childhood Center took a field trip to the Olmsted Falls Post Office last week.  The visit was the culmination of a special Valentine’s Day unit, which actually focuses on mail.

The children learned about writing letters, making and signing cards, addressing envelopes, the purpose and placement of stamps, sorting and delivering of mail, etc.  It was a wonderful hands-on experience for the students.

It is also terrific for them to be able to have these great experiences right here in their own community, in places that are part of their every day lives.  Thank you to the staff at the Olmsted Falls Post Office for helping create such a memorable visit for our littlest bulldogs.

OFHS SENIOR MEMBER OF AWARD-WINNING POLARIS RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT TEAM – WINS TOP HONORS AT STATE CULINARY COMPETITIONS

Congratulations to Olmsted Falls High School senior Daiekl Holton (pictured, back row, second from the right) and his Restaurant Management Team at Polaris on placing first in the recent 2012 ProStart Invitational Culinary and Restaurant Management Competitions in Columbus, Ohio.  This annual contest, which is presented by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), allows students from programs around the state to showcase their culinary and academic talents.

In the Restaurant Management competition, the students had to present an original concept to judges that demonstrated knowledge of the operation and success (profitability) of a food service establishment.  The team came up with a name and logo design. The presentation included menu design and food costing, facility design and decor, marketing strategies, employment practices and human resources.  Finally, the team also had to answer a barrage of critical thinking questions from a panel of food service experts.

Daiekl and his team will now represent Polaris and the state at the national competition in Baltimore, Maryland on April 26-29, 2012.  Congratulations and best of luck!  Note:  The Polaris Culinary Team also took top honors and will compete at the national competition in April.

As state champions, each student was awarded $112,500 each in college scholarships to several renowned culinary schools including a full ride to the Chef’s Academy valued at $72,500.  In all, Polaris students received scholarship awards totaling $1.12 million from the following culinary schools:  Johnson & Wales University, the Culinary Institute of America, the Chef’s Academy, Columbus Culinary Institute, International Culinary Schools at the Art Institutes, Mountain State University and Sullivan University.

CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES DAY AT THE ECC

Last week, the ECC held “Celebrating Differences Day” in which students learned about showing kindness toward persons with disabilities, and celebrated ways in which we are all alike yet different.  High School students from the Key Club performed a puppet show to reiterate these concepts.   Thank you to Key Club members Jackie Swinerton, Megan Doherty, Sam Lewarchick, and Emily Pfisterer!

Also,  members of the Girl Scouts  involved the kindergartners in several disability awareness activities.  Kelly Walker is the Scout leader, and the fifth grade Scouts (pictured below) are Alyssa Veverka, Abbie Katitus, Haley Taylor, Jillian Scott, and Elyse Walker.  Thank you to these Girl Scouts for their great work!  For more photos from “Celebrating Differences Day,” please click HERE.

LEGISLATOR REACHES OUT TO SUPERINTENDENTS REGARDING FEDERAL EDUCATION FUNDING – BURDEN CONTINUES TO BE PLACED ON LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS

Olmsted Falls Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Hoadley, as well as other local Superintendents in the area, received a letter from U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich last week regarding funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  While the federal government is supposed to be responsible for 40% of the additional costs associated with educating students with disabilities, current federal funding for IDEA is less than half that, resulting in a shortfall that places the burden on local school districts to fill the gap.  To read a copy of Representative Kucinich’s full letter, please click here.

While legislation is being introduced to increase federal funding to its full, promised level, there is no guarantee that will happen.  This is just one example of an unfunded mandate which negatively impacts local school finances and causes an increased burden on local tax payers.  In the Olmsted Falls School District, we are working hard to stretch every local tax dollar.  The recent passage of the 5-year Limited P.I. Levy – which did not raise the existing level of school taxes – is a good example of how we continue to work to maximize every dollar in an effort to stretch operating funds as far as possible.

If you have any questions about federal IDEA funding, or any questions about local funding / financial operations of the Olmsted Falls School system, please contact Superintendent Dr. Todd Hoadley at 427-6000.

Front row left to right: Morgan Finau, Madison Miller, Kaylee Gomez; Back row left to right: Mrs. Gulden, Emily Walchanowicz, Molly McCafferty, Megan Green, Nathan Loepp, Erika Ratcliff

The 7th Grade Power of the Pen team took top honors at the recent Power of the Pen tournament that took place on January 28th at North Royalton Middle School. The team placed FIRST out of 25 schools and brought home a big trophy symbolizing their unified effort to achieve a team goal.  Nathan Loepp not only placed 7th out of 150 students individually, but his first round piece was selected for the “Best of Round” award.  Molly McCafferty also received a medal honoring her 16th place individually. Other team members who wrote extremely well were Kaylee Gomez, Morgan Finau, Madison Miller, Megan Green, Emily Walchanowicz, and Erika Ratcliff.  The team is coached by Mrs. Gulden, middle school English and reading teacher.  Because the team scored extremely high in this district contest, they are excited to move on to Regionals that will take place on Saturday, March 24th, the first day of spring break!

Emmy Olszewski, 8th grade 3rd place winner

Eighth grader, Emmy Olszewski, also scored very high to achieve THIRD place individually (out of 150 students) and was awarded a trophy for her excellent skills and creativity in the 8th grade division.

Other eighth graders who attended the tournament were Claire Barrett, Zach Buchta, Jake Conder, Mariah Hydzik, Christina Pedicini, and Alex Zbiegien, all coached by 8th grade science teacher, Miss Scalley.

A Power of the Pen tournament is a creative writing competition where students from 25 different schools come together to write for three rounds on given topics and turn their papers in within 40 minutes to be judged. An awards assembly follows later in the afternoon to honor and celebrate the best writers and present team trophies.

Students on the team meet every Thursday morning at 7:30 to prepare for such an event by writing and discussing excellent style, literary aspects of effective writing techniques, and sharing their pieces for critique.

Congratulations, Power of the Pen Team members!

NEW BATTING CAGES INSTALLED AT THE HIGH SCHOOL

Two 70 foot batting cages were installed by Ohio’s own Victory Athletics over Winter Break, and the players have taken full advantage of using them during open cage sessions.

The cages, a result of a generous gift from the Olmsted Falls Athletic Boosters, operate on two separate motorized winches/pulleys so that they can be stored at ceiling level when not in use.  A vinyl flooring system was also purchased to prevent any damage to the gymnasium floor.

3 baseball teams and 2 softball teams will be able to occupy these cages year-round for both open cage and in-season sessions.  In the past, all 5 teams shared one cage, that was only able to be put up during the months of March, April and May.

Many thanks to the Olmsted Falls Athletic Boosters for the generous support of Bulldog athletics!

The Olmsted Falls High School Key Club is collecting gently used jeans of all sizes, colors and brands for the “Jeans for Teens” drive sponsored by Aéropostale.  The school that collects the most jeans to be donated to homeless shelters will win scholarship money, a celebrity attended party and a pair of designer jeans for every student.  Please consider going through your closets and donating your old jeans.  Collection boxes have been set up in the high school library to collect your donations now through February 12th.  If you have any questions, please contact Jenelle Hughes at the High School.
