SCHOOL SCHEDULED TO BE IN SESSION TOMORROW, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST

All Olmsted Falls School District buildings are scheduled to re-open tomorrow, Thursday, November 1st.

Thank you for your patience as we gathered the following information to make tomorrow’s return to school as smooth as possible.

***IMPORTANT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION***

Please note that, as of 6:30 p.m., our Bus Garage is still without power and is running on a back-up generator.  The phone system is functioning when the back-up generator is engaged.

Due to road closures remaining on Cranage, Clark and Usher Roads, a number of bus routes will need to be re-routed (see below).  Please plan for buses to be running late throughout all of tomorrow’s runs – morning, mid-day and afternoon.  The impact of the closures will be felt across the District.

We tried to hold off as long as possible to determine whether any of these closures would be lifted before tomorrow morning.  Unfortunately, as of 6:30 p.m. this evening, it appears that the closures on Cranage and Clark will still be in place tomorrow, and possibly beyond.

[There is a possibility that Usher Road will re-open overnight tonight, however we have put in place a contingency plan in the event that is remains closed. **NOTE:  IF USHER ROAD IS OPEN IN THE MORNING, ROUTES IN THIS AREA WILL RUN AS USUAL.**]

BREAKING NEWS – UPDATED 8:30 P.M. – OUR TRANSPORTATION DEPT. JUST RECEIVED THE CALL THAT USHER ROAD WILL RE-OPEN SHORTLY – BUS ROUTE CONNECTED WITH USHER ROAD WILL OPERATE TOMORROW AS NORMAL – (ALTERNATE BUS STOP LOCATIONS / TIMES FOR THIS ROUTE HAVE BEEN REMOVED AS THEY AE NOW NOT NEEDED.)

CRANAGE / CLARK CLOSURES REMAIN IN PLACE – ALTERNATE ROUTE INFORMATION BELOW STILL APPLIES

For those living near one of road closures, please see below for alternate bus stop location and approx. pick-up/drop-off times.  For those who are able to, you may want to plan to just drive your student to school; otherwise, the following alternate plans have been put into place:

ELEMENTARY ROUTES

Alternate Pick-Up / Drop Off for Cranage/Clark Closure area:

– If you are WEST of the trouble area:  Bus #74 will pick up students at intersection of Fitch & Cranage at approx. 7:25 a.m.; Bus #74 will drop off students at Mapleway & Cranage at approx. 2:50 p.m.

– If you are EAST of the trouble area:  Bus #67 will pick up students at the intersection of Cook & Clark at approx. 7:25 a.m.; Bus #67 will also pick up students at the intersection of Mapleway and Cranage at approx. 7:25 a.m.; Bus #67 will drop off as usual.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ROUTES

Alternate Pick-Up / Drop Off for Cranage/Clark Closure area:

If you are in the Cranage/Clark trouble area:  Bus #62 will pick up students at intersection of Clark & Cranage at approx. 7:50 a.m. and will also then pick up students at the intersection of Cranage & Fitch at approx.7:55 a.m.; Bus #62 will drop off students at  Clark & Cranage, then Cranage & Fitch as close to usual time as possible.

HIGH SCHOOL ROUTES

Alternate Pick-Up / Drop Off for Cranage/Clark Closure area:

If you are EAST of the trouble area:  Bus pick-up location (Mapleway & Cranage) and times will be the same as normal for pick up and drop off.

If you are WEST of the trouble area:  Bus #86 will pick up students at intersection of Fitch & Cranage at approx. 6:30 a.m.; Bus #83 will drop off as usual.

Again, please note that pick up/drop off times are approximate and that buses may be running late throughout the day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Bus Garage in the morning at 427-6350.  We thank you in advance for your patience and consideration as we work through these storm damage issues.

Finally, F.Y.I., the following COMMUNITY STORM UPDATEwas e-mailed to the District’s parent e-mail distribution list (at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30th):

Dear Bulldog Parents:
We are assisting the City of Olmsted Falls in pushing out important information regarding the impact of the storm. We are utilizing our parent e-mail distribution to get out the following important information:
  • There are several areas in our community currently without power due to outages causes by storm damage.
  • There are also a number of road closures throughout the community due to both downed trees and flooding including:
Crainage from Mapleway to Fitch is closed due to a downed tree.
Bagley Road near St. Mary of the Falls is closed due to flooding.
Bagley Road from High School to Middle School is closed due to flooding.
Sprague Road from Jacque to Usher is closed due to flooding.
For information on road closures, you can call the City dispatch at 235-3145. Updates will also soon be posted on the City website at www.olmstedfalls.org.
  • The power company currently has crews working in our area to “clear hazards” — this means that they are first working to remove downed trees and other hazards. Then, once hazards have been cleared, they will begin to work on repairing / restoring power.
Regarding the status of Olmsted Falls School District for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31st, a decision will be made later this evening as to whether school will be able to resume tomorrow. Please check the District website at www.ofcs.net for the latest information.
Please feel free to forward this e-mail to neighbors, friends and relatives in the community. Our thoughts are with those in our community who may have been personally impacted by storm damage.
Sincerely,
Kim Petrina

OFHS STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

Pictured Front (L to R):  National Merit Commended students Mitchel Zehe, Katelyn Edgehouse, and Kevin Thompson, with National Merit Semi-Finalists Nick Buchta and Megan Doherty.  Pictured Back Row (L to R): Board of Education Members Michelle Theriot, Rhonda McCrone and Greg Surtman, Board of Education Vice President Joe Bertrand and Board President Jim Weisbarth.

BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES FIVE-YEAR FORECAST

On October 17th, the Board of Education approved an updated five-year financial forecast. Ohio law requires a five-year forecast to be submitted to the Ohio Department of Education, by November 1st of each school year. To view the District’s new five-year forecast, please click here.

Like all financial projections, this document is based upon a set of assumptions which can be found at the beginning of the forecast.

During the campaign for the last operating levy (2009-2010 school year), the School Board pledged to make the funds from the levy last a minimum of three years.  Since that time, further cuts in state funding have occurred and forced many difficult decisions to be made by District officials.  However, with prudent spending, this pledge will be kept.

Going forward, it is important to know that, while the levy pledge has been kept, the District is annually spending more money than it receives each year.   As the five-year financial forecast shows, without further spending reductions, the District will only maintain a positive ending fund balance through the end of the 2014-2015 school year.  After that, projections indicate that the District will be completely out of money.

THE ACADEMIC COMPETITION SEASON HAS BEGUN

On October 6, the Academic Team hosted the Fall Kickoff Tournament (FKT) with 32 Ohio teams.  The A Team (Marty Mendenhall, Nathan Seese, Andy Nageotte, and Zach Buchta) won the overall tournament qualifying for the spring PACE Nationals.  Senior and team captain Marty Mendenhall (pictured at left), was the overall top scorer of the tournament.  Thank you to parents, teachers, and Kiwanis who helped with the tournament.

On October 13, the Academic Team traveled to Morgantown, WV for an NAQT National Qualifier Tournament.  Our A Team (Marty, Nathan, Andy, Zach, and Jorden Rieke) finished 2nd overall and our B Team (Julie Wu, Xavier Riviera, Alec Sims, Cecelia Dahlinger, and Emily Burland) finished in a tie for 5th overall.  This tournament had teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

ANNUAL STAFF WELLNESS FAIR

As health insurance costs continue to increase, maximizing the health of staff members is one way that employers can ensure their organization is positioned to receive the best rates available. Olmsted Falls School District has had a Staff Wellness Program in place for the past several years featuring a number of components to promote healthy lifestyles among employees.

One component of this Wellness Program is the annual Staff Wellness Fair – which provides all employees with an opportunity to participate in a number of free screenings as well as to receive their annual flu vaccine. The 2012 Wellness Fair for staff took place in the Middle School gym last week.  Many thanks to local community partners, including Shaker’s IGA, whose participation in this year’s Staff Wellness Fair helped further enhance the event for all!  Congratulations to Shaker Gift Card winners Falls-Lenox art teacher Renee Wagner, High School math teacher Sheri DiLoreto-Smith and bus driver Kathy Barber, who were the winners of Shaker Gift Cards!  To view photos from this year’s Staff Wellness Fair, please click here.

PRELIMINARY REPORTS INDICATE OLMSTED FALLS SCHOOLS “EXCELLENT WITH DISTINCTION”

The Olmsted Falls School District is pleased to report that initial data provided by the Ohio Department of Education indicates the District will likely receive an overall rating of “Excellent with Distinction” on the annual Local Report Card ratings. “Excellent with Distinction” is the highest possible rating that school districts can achieve on the state’s Local Report Card ratings each year. The Local Report Card ratings are based on four components which include: Number of State Indicators Met (on annual achievement tests); Performance Index (scale of 0-120 points); AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress); and Value-Added (measure of how much growth/progress was made since the prior year).

For 2011-2012, preliminary data released indicates Olmsted Falls School District met 26 out of 26 State Indicators, achieved a Performance Index of 106.5; met AYP; and exceeded the Value-Added growth measure, which gives the District its “Excellent with Distinction” rating. In addition, Olmsted Falls School District had an attendance rate of 96.4% and a graduation rate of 94.2%. Congratulations to the students, staff and families of Olmsted Falls for it is your collective efforts and support that make our outstanding educational program possible. DAKOTA’S DREAM FUNDRAISER!

The K-Kids organization at OFIS coordinated a school-wide change collection fundraiser last week to benefit the annual Dakota’s Dream Fundraiser. Dakota Bihn is a student at OFIS this year. The change collection lasted from 9/17-9/21 and culminated with a pizza party and special gift for the top raising 4th grade class (Mrs. Judson) and 5th grade class (Mrs. Harb). The staff and students at OFIS raised over $5300.00 for the Dakota’s Dream Fundraiser which benefits the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation. Dakota’s family, in concert with many other Tay-Sachs families, founded the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation in June 2007 to fund research that shows promise to treat or cure Tay-Sachs disease.

Kudos to all of the students and staff at OFIS for their enthusiastic participation in this effort! And, congratulations to Mrs. Harb’s class (pictured with Dakota and Mr. Svec) for raising the most money as a class – $561! Finally, special thanks to Dan Largent and the Olmsted Falls High School baseball players who also collected for Dakota’s Dream and brought in over $1000!
