IMPORTANT UPDATE ON SCHOOL SAFETY FROM SUPERINTENDENT DR. TODD HOADLEY

DrHoadleyOFCSWe are truly blessed to live in such a warm and caring community.  Our recent recreation survey shows that our parents feel the Olmsted Falls School District is a great place to raise a family.  At the same time, the tragedy that occurred last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut has changed our world in a dramatic way and it has reinforced the need to be constantly mindful of our safety procedures so as to ensure our children are always protected.

As stated on last week’s blog, one of our 2012/2013 District goals is to conduct a complete review of our safety plans and procedures.  If you have not already done so, I encourage you to complete the parent safety survey and submit your ideas for improving school safety procedures.  Your input is valuable and appreciated. On Monday, all District principals met….[READ MORE]

TOYS FOR TOTS BY: AINSLEY ALLEN (5th grade student – OFIS)

OFIS toys for tots volunteersImagine that you’re a kid waking up to no gifts on Christmas morning.  Olmsted Falls Intermediate School filled two overflowing huge appliance boxes to donate to the marine’s Toys for Tots organization.  The school’s student council sponsored this event.  Toys for Tots gives gifts to kids who wouldn’t usually get them this holiday.

6 kids and their parents volunteered to help by putting toys into boxes and loading them into cars.  Then, they brought the boxes into the American greeting’s warehouse and sorted them for different ages.

Knowing that we’re helping give toys to kids just like us who usually won’t be getting any, makes you think about how lucky some people are to have toys under their tree.

5TH GRADERS VISIT FALLS-LENOX FIRST GRADERS!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn Monday, Falls-Lenox first graders had special visitors!!  The fifth grade students and their teachers came to share some of their writings as well as some holiday cheer.  Students were placed in small groups or pairs and each 5th grader read a poem that they had written.  They brought a copy for their first grade buddy so they could keep it.  First grade students also shared something they had written with their buddy.  Then the groups completed a snowman craft for the first grader to take home. Finally, the students worked together to write an acrostic poem called “Snow”.  Thanks to Mrs. Atkins and the 5th grade staff and students for sharing their love of writing with us.  What a great Language Arts lesson for everyone!  For more photos, please click here.

Beginning this week, Olmsted Falls School District transitioned to an updated parent e-mail distribution list.  This new list contains all current parent/guardian e-mails from the District’s new PowerSchool database. If you find that you are no longer receiving District e-mails alerts, please contact Kim Petrina via e-mail at kpetrina@ofcs.net and provide the name(s)/grade(s) for each of your students.  This will enable us to add your e-mail to the new parent e-mail distribution as well as to the PowerSchool database, so that you may continue to receive District communications via e-mail.

Parent Update – December 5, 2012

December 5, 2012 Comments off

**SCHOOL SAFETY SURVEY LINK TO BE E-MAILED TO PARENTS**

Within the next few days, parents will be receiving an important e-mail containing a link to an on-line survey regarding school safety.  As recently detailed in the November 7th blog update, Olmsted Falls School District is currently working to assess and update all current safety plans throughout the District.  These important school safety surveys for parents are an important component of this process.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Each building will have its own specific survey which will be targeted to parents of students in that particular building.  This means that a parent with children in multiple buildings will receive multiple survey links.  All parents are encouraged to complete a survey for each building in which they have a child enrolled.  The input of our parents will play a critical role in the updating of building safety plans.

UPDATED PARENT E-MAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST

Olmsted Falls Schools will begin utilizing an updated parent e-mail database – pulled from the new PowerSchool system – for all e-mail communications, beginning with the distribution of the above mentioned school safety survey links.  Parents are asked to monitor their e-mail carefully over the next week or so to ensure that they do not inadvertently drop off the distribution list in the transition.

District Communications Director Kim Petrina will be sending alerts regarding the transition to the existing parent e-mail distribution list to ensure that all parent e-mails are included in the new distribution.  If you have any questions or concerns about the status of your e-mail during this process, please contact Kim Petrina at kpetrina@ofcs.net or 427-6000.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR COLD & FLU:  SCHOOL HEALTH CLINIC PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR COMMON ILLNESSES

illness_photoFlu and cold season are fast approaching, and your School Health Care Team is aware that it is sometimes difficult to decide when and how long to keep an ill child home from school. The timing of the absence is often important in order to decrease the spread of disease to others, and to prevent your child from acquiring any other illnesses while his/her resistance is lowered. A one-sheet summary of guidelines has been provided by the School Health Clinic to cover the more common childhood illnesses and the usual recommendations for school and daycare.

Please click HERE to download the guidelines.  Special thanks to District Nurse Carol Meszaros, RN, for pulling together this very useful tool.
