Their top spot at the 2014 ProStart Invitational Culinary and Restaurant Management Competition earned them a trip to compete at the national level in Minneapolis in May.

Their teammates are Renne Ondrejech, senior, Berea-Midpark High School; Ashley Brunner, junior, Fairview High School and DeVan Anderson, junior, North Olmsted High. This competition allows students from programs around the state to showcase their culinary and academic  talents in a real world setting.

In this competition students presented an original concept to judges that demonstrate knowledge of the operation and success (profitability) of a food service establishment, also creating a name and logo design.  The presentation includes menu design and food costing, facility design and decor, marketing strategies, employment practices and human resources.  The team also had to answer a barrage of critical thinking questions from a panel of food service experts.

Tuesday, February 18th – District Closure Alert

February 18, 2014 Comments off

All Olmsted Falls School District buildings will be closed today, Tuesday,  Feb. 18th, due to inclement weather.

Please stay safe!

*** IMPORTANT NOTE RE: AUTOMATED VOICE MESSAGING***

Olmsted Falls School District experienced delays with this morning’s automated voice message about today’s closure.  While the Power Announcement system effectively transmitted emails and text messages to parents/staff at approx. 5:20 a.m. this morning regarding today’s closure, the automated voice message delivery process experienced significant delays.  For many, it took more than two hours before the call came through.

We have been in contact with Power Announcement throughout the morning, and their engineering department is actively monitoring the call delay situation, which was experienced by other clients as well.  We anticipate a fuller explanation as to the problem later this morning.  In the meantime, we wanted to communicate to parents and staff members that we are aware of the situation and apologize for any inconvenience.

On a positive note, having multiple methods of communicating school closures – via text, email, voice, District website, District Blog & local media – hopefully provides our school community with the ability to quickly learn about District closures.

Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

OLMSTED FALLS SCHOOL DISTRICT EMBARKS ON COLLABORATIVE PROJECT TO UPDATE DISTRICT’S STRATEGIC PLAN

Olmsted Falls School District has begun the process of outlining refinements to the District’s strategic plan. The end result will be a strategic plan that will provide a consistent framework to guide decision-making in the District over the next three to five years.  The Board of Education has partnered with O.E. Strategies, Inc., located in Broadview Heights, to guide the overall process as the District works to refine and update its existing Strategic Plan.

DSC_8104

Superintendent Dr. Jim Lloyd welcomed Steering Committee members as the group prepared to begin work refining the District’s Strategic Plan.

A steering committee representing a wide cross-section of district stakeholders came together on January 31st to begin the process.  The committee worked to assess where the District is now, and where it wants to head in the future.  Steering committee members include representatives from the Board of Education, District administration, certified and classified staff, as well as two OFHS students. Additionally, the District is also fortunate to have the participation of local business executive Joe Pullella, V.P. of Operations at VitaMix, the second largest employer in the District behind Olmsted Falls School District itself.

DSC_8111

Steering Committee members spent time in break-out groups during the day-long work session.

“In the spirit of collaboration we wanted to bring all of these voices together to begin the work of creating of a strategic plan that is aligned with the current and future needs of our students, our District and our community.  Each steering committee member comes to the table with a set of experiences and aspirations that will offer great value to this important process,” said Superintendent Dr. Jim Lloyd.

Ultimately, the refinements to the Strategic Plan will be based on a comprehensive assessment of culture, strengths, challenges, opportunities, and barriers – led by the steering committee and also reaching beyond to include a series of conversations and feedback loops from various stakeholder groups and community partners. The end result will allow for effective communication to constituents about the challenges and opportunities facing the District, along with clearly defined and measurable goals to build on the District’s already high performance.

The strategic plan, scheduled to be formally adopted by the Board this June, will also provide a basis for stage setting, measuring progress and creating a means for informed change to the plan when needed.

“Good organizations learn and grow to become great ones, and great ones set their sights to become even greater. We are confident this process will allow us to continue to excel as we adapt to the evolving needs of our students, families, staff and community,” added Dr. Lloyd.

Please watch for future updates on the strategic planning process in the District’s Weekly Blog update and printed School Report.  To view additional photos from the first meeting of the Steering Committee, please click HERE.

OFIS GREEN TEAM IS RECYCLING FRIENDLY

OFIS Green Team 2014About 30 OFIS fifth graders are busy making the building “green.”  These Green Team members spend their free time after school working on various environmental-type projects. Right now they are spreading the word about collecting juice pouches and chip bags to earn money through a company called TerraCycle.  Each bag and juice pouch collected is worth 2 cents. The group also is collecting lids for an upcoming recycling project.

If you would like to help with this project, please send any size lid to OFIS labeled “Green Team.” For a photo gallery of the Green Team at work, click HERE.

The group also began a Waste-Free Wednesday Lunch program. Before starting the program, the garbage at lunch weighed 382 lbs. After implementing the program, the lunch waste was reduced to 280 lbs. Its goal is 100 lbs. The ways to achieve this is using lunch bags, plastic containers, reusable silverware and eating all of their lunches. The changes will help reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfill.

In addition to the Green Team, everyone in the school works together to recycle paper in their own classrooms. Did you also know the building is heated and cooled by a geothermal system?
