OLMSTED FALLS RECOGNIZES NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK
Olmsted Falls School District celebrated National School Bus Safety Week (Oct. 20-24) in style. ECC held a pep rally where kindergarten students learned about safe riding and making good choices on the school bus. The OF Board of Education approved a resolution, as did the city of Olmsted Falls, which also acknowledged the special week on its Village Green community sign.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol also visited the district to support the cause. The OSHP’s motor vehicle inspection team rode local routes and had a presence on the sidewalks in the morning. State Trooper Jeff Hirsch followed routes monitoring bus stops and patrolling the roadways for red light violations, since the latter is a prevalent problem with motorists nationwide. On that day, there were no violators they saw or ticketed in the Olmsted Falls School District.
It was a special week to remind everyone of school bus safety. To view the board of education’s resolution, click HERE.
Parents of students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to attend tonight’s information night to learn about the new College Preparatory Math (CPM) program being used by 6th – 12th grade students this year. (Parents of students in lower grade levels are also welcome to attend.) CPM is a resource that uses problem-based lessons, collaborative student study teams, and learning strategies that are consistent with the Standards for Mathematical Practices.
The meeting will provide parents with an overview of CPM and what a typical lesson looks like for the students. A previous information was held at the Middle School earlier this month. For those unable to attend either session, we will be posting the presentations, along with a link to Frequently Asked Questions, on the District website. Please watch future blogs for links.
TONIGHT’s CPM parent meeting is at 7 p.m. in the OFHS Media Center.

During last school year (2013-2014), the Olmsted Falls School District aligned attendance procedures throughout the district for students in grades 1 to 12. This update to previous policies provides consistency from building to building as it relates to coding of absences, as well as, adheres to guidelines for state attendance reporting.
Please be aware of the following attendance procedures in effect for all students attending Falls-Lenox, OFIS, OFMS and OFHS:
Coding Procedures for Tardy, ½ Day AM and ½ Day PM:
Tardy: Any student entering the building within 90 minutes of the first bell will be considered tardy.
½ Day AM Absence: Any student entering the building after the first 90 minutes of the school day, will be marked with a ½ day AM Absence.
½ Day PM Absence: Any student leaving the building prior to the last 90 minutes of the school day will be marked with a ½ day PM absence.
* In the case of a doctor’s appointment: If the student has a doctor’s appointment and is out of school for less than two hours, it will not be counted as an absence if a doctor’s note is provided upon his/her return. If a doctor’s appointment runs longer than two hours, it will be coded as either a ½ day excused absence (with a doctor’s note) or a ½ day unexcused absence (without a doctor’s note).
All student absences are unexcused in PowerSchool until changed to excused by the attendance secretary based upon parent contact.
Students may be excused from school for up to 5 days each school year for vacation with prior approval. Vacation days in excess of 5 days will be considered unexcused unless approved by school administration.
If any student reaches 10 days of absences in the school year (either excused or unexcused), all future absences during the same school year will be considered UNEXCUSED unless a doctor’s note is provided to the school.
Any student with continuous unexcused absences for 105 school hours will be withdrawn from school.
Student absences due to weather conditions, confirmed by parent contact, are considered EXCUSED absences.
Olmsted Falls School District uses the PowerSchool automated phone system to notify parents/guardians of unexcused absences. Please Note: ECC, Falls-Lenox and OFIS will make additional follow-up calls AFTER automated calls are sent, if parent still does not call back.
