Please be sure to note on your calendar that there will be NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH due to a District Staff In-Service Day.  The District will also be CLOSED ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH in honor of President’s Day.  All school buildings will be back in session on Tuesday, February 17th.

POWER OF THE PEN PLACE 1ST AND 2ND IN COMPETITION

power of the pen competitorsSeventh- and eighth-grade Power of the Pen teams recently traveled to Cuyahoga Heights Middle School for the first creative writing tournament of the season. The results were great! The seventh-grade team took first place and the eighth-grade team, second! Congratulations to the following writers for their successes:

Grade 7 team included Emily Kasl, who came in first; Kayla Kippes; Nicole Latona; Rhiannon Lloyd; Kristen Miller, who came in eighth; Ashley Rice; Neil Spooner and Summer Stevens, who came in 10th place.

Those on grade 8 team were Emma Andrus, who took second place; Jamie Bridle, who came in 15th place; Lauren Gumeny; Morgan Luke; Cameron Nelson; Ally Rice, who came in 11th place; Jillian Scott and Victoria Steiert.

OFHS ROBOTICS TEAM TAKES CREATIVE AWARD

CSU robotics 2Four OFHS teams participated at the Cleveland State Regional VEX Robotics Competition. The event included 40 teams from across Northeast Ohio. Two Bulldog teams battled to the semi-final round before being defeated.

CSU robotics 3The highlight of the event was the team consisting of Molly McCafferty, Joselyn Rabbitt and Stephanie Schroth, who won the Creative Award.  The honor is earned by a team whose robotic design incorporates a creative engineering solution to the design challenges of this year’s game.

Judges looked for teams that demonstrated a highly creative engineering process that incorporates solid mechanical ability, unique design solutions and innovative approaches to the game play.

Congratulations to this team and all Bulldogs in the competition!

DISTRICT SEEKS PARENT INPUT ON MATH PILOT PROGRAMS THROUGH ONLINE SURVEY

cyber computerATTN: ECC/F-L/OFIS PARENTS – Olmsted Falls School District is seeking important input from parents with students in classrooms currently participating in either the Eureka or Bridges math pilot program at the ECC, Falls-Lenox and/or OFIS.  Survey links were sent out by teachers to parents of students in the current pilot classrooms this past week.  We encourage you to access the survey link and share your thoughts on the pilot program.  Your input will be very valuable as the District works toward making a final determination regarding which program to move forward with for the 2015-2016 school year and beyond.

Congratulations to senior varsity basketball player Kerri Gasper who recently scored her 1,000th point.  

She achieved this landmark level January 28th on the home court against Westlake High School.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOCKEY GAME – TOMORROW, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH

hockey logoThe Bulldogs’ final regular hockey game is at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, February 8th at Brooklyn Recreation Center vs. North Olmsted.  It also is Senior Night.  If you are unable to attend, you may view the replayed game at 8 p.m. February 8th on Time Warner SportsChannel 1311 HD & 311.  Go Bulldogs!

GRADE 3 DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK POSTER WINNERS

ATTENTION: PARENTS OF INCOMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS – ONLINE REGISTRATION OPENS THIS MONDAY!

kinderThe online registration portal for new kindergarten students will open at NOON this Monday, February 9th.  All families registering kindergarten students for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year should plan to visit or call the Early Childhood Center Office on or after February 9th to schedule required in-person registration appointments.  Registering a NEW KINDERGARTEN STUDENT is a 2-STEP PROCESS:

Step 1:  Contact the ECC Office at (440) 427-6360 to schedule your required in-person Kindergarten Registration appointment.

Step 2:  Complete the online registration process PRIOR TO your scheduled in-person registration appointment.  (A detailed registration instruction sheet will be available at the ECC on or after February 9th.)

*NOTE:  Please do NOT attempt to register your 2015-2016 kindergarten student with the existing New Student Registration link for current 2014-2015.  The 2015-2016 New Student Registration link is a completely separate database and will not be available or posted until noon on Monday, February 9th.

Parents who will have children starting kindergarten in the Olmsted Falls School District next school year (2015-2016) should mark calendars with these IMPORTANT DATES:

February 9th   – Online Registration Opens @ NOON (Call 427-6360 or visit the Early Childhood Center, located at 7105 Fitch Road, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on school days to set up your in-person appointments and get instructions for required online registration step.)

February 26th  Kindergarten Information Night, 7 p.m. at the Early Childhood Center.  (Babysitting available.)

March 10th – 12th Kindergarten Registration by appointment at Early Childhood Center.

April 14th & 15 Kindergarten Screening by appointment at Early Childhood Center.

The OFHS wrestling team is a nominee for the JJHuddle/Bucknuts Ohio High School Wrestling Team of the Week. Fan votes decide the winner. Voting is live and will end at noon on Monday, February 9th. You can vote as many times as you like.

PTA BATTLE OF THE SCHOOLS MOVES TO TUESDAY NIGHT – THIS TUESDAY, FEB. 10th – THIS YEAR! 

DodgeballCome out and support your school at the annual PTA Battle of the Schools Dodgeball Tournament – scheduled for this TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10th.  The Battle of the Schools will begin at 7 p.m. in the OFHS gym.  Tickets are $3 for students, $6 for adults and will be on sale at the door!  All money raised for this event goes to PTA scholarship fund.

INTERESTED IN PLAYING OFHS SOCCER?  ATTEND TEAM/PARENT MEETING – THIS WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11TH

OFHS soccer decalThe OFHS Boys Soccer Team 2015 Player/Parent meeting is from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 11th in the school’s library.

All players planning on playing soccer for OFHS in 2015 must attend the meeting with a parent.  If, for some reason, such as club training, soccer game, etc. you cannot attend, please have your parent attend.

IMPORTANT:  COMPASS TESTING REQUIRED FOR ENROLLMENT IN COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS CLASSES AT OFHS NEXT YEAR SCHEDULED FOR FEB. 13TH & 18TH – REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

For any student interested in registering for College Credit Plus classes next year, OFHS is offering the COMPASS test on February 13, 2015 and February 18, 2015.  We have 150 spaces available for students to test in the areas of Language Arts and Math.  Students cannot register for College Credit Plus classes without passing the COMPASS test. College Credit Plus (formerly known as Post-Secondary Options) provides students the opportunity to earn transferable college credit while still in high school.  The following courses will be offered at Olmsted Falls High School next school year (2015-2016):

*Biology  (Science)

Drawing I  (Art)

*College Composition I & II  (Language Arts)

*United States History I & II (Social Studies)

Fundamentals of Sports Management (Health & Physical Education)

*College Algebra/Trigonometry  (Math)

*Indicates a weighted grade will be issued.

OFHS SENIORS: LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE THIS THURSDAY, FEB. 12TH

scholarshipsSeveral area businesses and service organizations each year generously award scholarships to deserving seniors based on both financial need and merit. All seniors planning to attend college or technical school are encouraged to apply. Applications are available in the guidance office. The deadline is 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12th. Late applications will not be accepted.

TRI-C TRANSFER INFO NIGHT AT BEREA-MIDPARK HIGH – THURSDAY, FEB. 12TH

Berea-Midpark High School and Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) will host a Tri-C Transfer Talk from 6-7:30 p.m. February 12th at Berea-Midpark High School’s auditorium, 165 E. Bagley Road, Berea.

Attendees will learn about the advantages of attending Tri-C, completing a degree and transferring to such four-year institutions as Baldwin Wallace University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, University of Akron and others. Click HERE to view a flyer of the event.

An orientation for parents of freshman entering the high school next year is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, February 19th in the OFHS auditorium.  All parents of current 8th grade students should plan to attend to discuss scheduling, assessments, and to meet our some of our faculty members.  Guidance Counselors will be on hand to answer questions as well. We look forward to seeing you there!

WEB LOCK-IN SET FOR FEBRUARY 20TH-21ST WEEKEND

lock-in-300x280The grade 8 WEB leaders and grade 6 students are invited to attend the February 20th-21st WEB Lock In at the OFMS.  Drop off time is 8 p.m. with pick up at 7 a.m. the next day.

Activities planned for the event are basketball, dodgeball, cooking, dancing, nail painting with food and more.

Parents may drop off donations for door prizes, such as gift cards, gift baskets and games, through February 20th in the Guidance Office.  More details to come!

CAMP INVENTION IS COMING!

C-OH04-14238-15_EARLY-WEB_Page_1Camp Invention is coming to Falls-Lenox Primary School this summer!  This innovative, week-long summer camp provides students in grades 1st to 6th with a hands-on, interactive program inspired by the Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Camp Invention will run from June 8-12th from 9 a.m. to 3;30 p.m. daily.  Information is being sent home with students this week!  To view the flyer online, please click HERE.  Registration is online at www.campinvention.org.  Students registering BY MARCH 20TH will receive a $25 discount.

Attend the February 7th OF Alumni Association’s Las Vegas Night from 7 p.m. to midnight at the West Side Irish-American Club. All profits go toward scholarships for the OFHS Class of 2015. The night includes such games as big wheel, dice, black Jack, let it ride, poker, Texas hold ‘em and a 50/50 raffle, side boards and more with a cash bar and refreshments by Angelina’s Pizza.

mardi grasThe OFHS swim and dive team’s annual Dinner and Raffle is February 17th – Fat Tuesday – from 6-9 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Famous Dave’s is catering the event.

The raffle includes more than 50 prizes for children and adults, which local merchants and swim families donated.  Raffles tickets are available at the dinner.

Admission is $5 for those during the 8-9 a.m. Early Bird hour; $2 from 9 a.m. to noon and $3 per bag from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

ENJOY HORSING AROUND AT THIS ATHLETIC BOOSTERS EVENT

NightAtTheRacesNavyOlmsted Falls Athletic Boosters’ Night at the Races is one of its biggest fundraisers of the year.  All proceeds support the district’s athletic teams. It is March 21st at St. Demetrios Cultural Center, 22909 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River. Tickets are $35 a person or $280 for a table of eight. The ticket includes a buffet dinner and refreshments.

The community can help in raising funds for the March 15th event by purchasing a ticket to attend or buying one or more horses. Everyone, whether an individual, civic groups, clubs or businesses, may participate. There are 90 horses available to buy. If your group wishes to buy all nine horses in a given race, contact us ASAP. We will make that happen.

HURRY! REGISTER FOR YOUTH TRAVEL BASEBALL LEAGUE BY SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH

The registration deadline is February 7th. The form is available at its website by clicking HERE.

Play is typically a higher degree of talent than players participating in a community recreational league and so is the commitment. A typical season consists of 12-20 regular season games followed by a year-end league tournament. The season begins around May 1 and ends mid-July.

OLMSTED COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL HAS ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE

JOIN THE OLMSTED COMMUNITY’S SEA OF BLUE CAMPAIGN!

image-of-blue-ribbon bluelightbulbTownship resident Karen Corrigan has brought the Sea of Blue Campaign to the Olmsted community.  All Olmsted Falls and Olmsted Township residents are invited to show support for the nations’ police along with our local community’s police officers by displaying a blue ribbon and/or a blue light.  Residents are encouraged to display a blue ribbon and/or a blue light on the exterior of their home, apartment or place of business.

Blue ribbons are available now at the Olmsted Township Town Hall, Olmsted Township Police Department lobby, Olmsted Falls City Hall and at the courtesy counter of Shakers’ IGA – stop in and pick yours up today!  A local community Sea of Blue rally event is also scheduled for Saturday, March 21st at noon!  Stay tuned for additional details.  All residents are encouraged to leave their blue ribbons and blue lights on display until the rally on March 21st!
