Has anyone seriously dissected Kasich’s proposed school budget? According to Cleveland.com, Olmsted Falls would gain approximately 14% more money from the state of Ohio. Is that correct or is this misleading and why? Thank you.

Dave you ask a great question. Yes is the short answer…people at the state and local levels are working on dissecting Kasich’s proposed school budget. The key word is “proposed.” As it currently sits, OFCSD would benefit from how it is written if it were to be approved as written. At this point we are cautiously optimistic that we will not need to ask our residents for additional resources to support the operation of the school district. The most important number isn’t the percent increase or decrease, but the number of dollars received in relation to the district’s overall budget. OFCS receives about 33% of its total budget from the state (about $12.5 million). Cutting that figure would force us to cut programs or seek additional revenues from our local tax payers because it represents a very large portion of our budget. So if it unfolds as proposed, we will be in decent shape. This notwithstanding, we continue to have some very significant facility needs at our high school as demonstrated by the classroom trailers that have been used as classrooms for the past 14 years.
